ある家の当主から極秘の調査依頼を受け、クリスマスに招待されたポアロ。ところが当主は殺されていて・・・
「思い切り血の出る作品を」とのリクエストに応えてクリスティーが珍しく書いた、殺人現場の沢山の血が残る作品。彼女の本領はどちらかというと毒殺系なのだが。トリックは人間心理を衝いたものというよりは割に機械的。

本筋の殺人事件とは別の事件も進行していたり、ニセの手がかりも結構ある。
毎年クリスマスシーズンに新刊を出していたクリスティーだが、当然クリスマスものばかり書いているわけにもいかない。クリスマスものとしては、他に『クリスマス・プディングの冒険』がある。

イギリスの伝統的なクリスマス。その前後一週間で起きる事件をポアロが見事に解決していく。
そんな中でもアガサ・クリスティーのクリスマスに対する考えがポアロの台詞として発言されていたりして…
ポアロファンの私としては欠かせない一つです。
