人生を辿る間に数々あらわれる岐路（わかれ路）は、その瞬間瞬間の判断で決まっていく。人生哲学をつくづく感じた著書です。
傍目には恵まれたエリート弁護士ドゥロモーが、自ら引き起こした自動車事故の直後から、脳裏に浮かぶ様々の思いを一人称で綴っていきます。突然致命傷を負った彼には死に対する準備もなく、これまでの人生を省みる時間的余裕もありません。にも関わらず、脳裏に次々思い浮かぶ記憶とそれに纏わる感情が、彼に新たな自覚と精神的成長を促していきます。しかしその様な成熟も、間もなく死を迎える彼にとっては何の甲斐もなく、もはや空しいものでしかありません。
重いテーマをストイックに描きだしたギマールの文体に惹かれます。
