最初の５巻は紛う事なき名作です。
ヒロイック・ファンタジーとしても、三国志的な国盗り物の序章としても、ＳＦとしてもです。
抑制を効かした文章（この著者にしては、ですが）、魅力的な伏線、ストーリーの展開、キャラクターの立たせ方、どれもこれも素晴らしいです。

この初期の勢いと刷り込みだけで、２０巻くらいまでは一気に読み進めるでしょう。

しかし、それ以降は覚悟が必要です。

本当にこの小説と最後まで付き合うのかどうか？
どこで夢が覚めてしまうのか？
そういった岐路にぶち当たります。

それは各人によって異なると思います。私は５０巻くらいまで自分を騙し騙しやってきましたが、限界を感じて見切りました。
依然として素晴らしい箇所も沢山ありますが、全体としてはとてもプロの作品のレベルには無いと思います。

はっきり言ってしまうと、途中からこの小説は同人誌と同じレベルに成り下がります。
著者にとって、悪い意味での「ライフ・ワーク」になってしまったのだと思います。
内容は限りなく薄くなり「キャラ萌え」できない人間にとっては読むのが苦痛なページが大半を占めるようになります。

私は、今でも新刊が出れば立ち読みや図書館で借りて読んでしまいますが、はっきり言って惰性と義務感以外の何者でもありません。


しかし、そういう事を含めても、これだけの長編を書き続ける体力、魅力的な世界とキャラクターを構築してしまった筆力と想像力は賞賛に値します。
なにより、最初の５巻は素晴らしいです。それだけでも、この小説を読む価値は充分にあると思います。

これからこの小説に手を出す方は、そういう事を踏まえて、落胆しないように心構えをした方が良いでしょう。

　読み始めたのは高校生のとき、当時は本編が18巻ぐらいだったから、割とリアルタイムに読んできたと思う。最初はのめり込みました。終らない物語を書きたいという栗本氏の発言にも大いに共感できる年齢だった。あとがきから読む、なんていう邪道を覚えたのも、このシリーズだった。なのでこれから読む方には一応お勧めします。

　ただ、当時はわからなかったのは、読書量がふえると感想も変わるということ、何より自分も年をとっていくという事実だ。その点、書き続けている栗本氏はすごいと思うが、途中で１年に１冊とかいうペースになって、その間、当然別の本を読むわけで、いつの間にかナリス様がガキに、ヴァレリウスもただのつまらないおっさんに見えるようになっちゃったんだな。60巻前後に挫折した。

　果てしない物語も、良し悪しである。
　
　追記：56歳の訃報は早すぎる。結局、未完ということになってしまいましたね。

　友人に勧められてこのシリーズを読み始めたのは大学一年の時だから、ずいぶん昔のことだけれど、読み始めた時のあのワクワク感は今でも鮮明に覚えている。魅力的な登場人物、血沸き肉踊るストーリー。しかも、作者自身が、本を読み終えてお話が終わってしまうのが残念で、それなら、終わらない、長い長い物語を書いてやろう・・・と考えたという、百巻まで続く物語！まさに夢のような。
　栗本さんが乳がんを患ったころ、グインが未完で終わってしまうのではと不安で、どうかグインを書き終わるまでは栗本さんが元気でいてくれますようにと勝手なことを祈っていた。
　さすがに近頃は読んでいなかったのだが、まさか本当に、グインが未完で終わってしまうとは。終わらない物語を夢見ていたとはいえ、あまりに悲しすぎる。大好きなナリス様のもとへ行かれたのですね。栗本さんのご冥福をお祈りします。
