SFが苦手な私でもすごく楽しめました。
１アイディアを、冗長に引き延ばさず短編でまとめるので、飽きずに読めます。
友人が「とにかくまずは表題作だけでも絶対読め。」と凄く薦めてきたのですが、
このアドバイスが良かったです。
ですので表題作の紹介を。
語り手は言語学者。軍から異星人の言語体系の調査チームに招かれます。
相手の言葉を知る、というのは単純に林檎→appleと、置き換えの言葉を覚える、
ということではありません。
考え方も違えば、文法のあり方も変わってくるのです。
語り手は、異星人の言語を調査する中で、逆に異星人の考え方も獲得していく。
そしてその見方で自分の人生を見ていくと…。
上記のようなSFとしてのアイディアが、
痛みと喜びの伴う「物語」として構築されていくところが見事。

また、この作品、「物語り方」がまた秀逸。
語り手が「あなた」へ語りかける段落と、通常の段落とが交互に進んでいきます。
この「あなた」は、語り手の娘を差すのですが、
ブライツライトビッグシティを持ち出すまでもなく、
「あなた」という呼びかけが連呼されると、（物語の枠外の）読み手の方にも、
呼びかけられているかのような奇妙な感覚がわき起こります。
そして呼びかけておいては、すっと別の段落に切り替わる。
だから読み手は語り手に引き込まれ、「何？」と、どんどん物語にのめり込む。
これだけでもうまいなあと最初は思っていたのです。
でも、この作品に関しては、単純にそれだけではなく、
読み進めていく中で、こういう語り口、構成それ自体が、
作者の上記アイディアの表現でもあるのだ、という事に気付かされます。
それに気付いたときはぞくぞくするほど興奮しました。


良質のSFというのは
「今自分が知っていると思っている世界の有り様は当たり前の物ではない」
ということに気付かさせてくれるのだなあと、
SFというジャンル自体への苦手意識も和らげてくれた作品です。

宗教色の濃い話が多いので、読む人によっては身構えてしまうかも知れないが、この本に出てくる「神」は異星人と同じ、単なる装置である。その「装置」の役割は、人類にとって「理解不能な存在」だ。レムほどではないにせよ、人間のことを気にかけて、何かを与えてくれるような神や異星人は、チャンの小説には出てこない。

登場人物たちはそれらの存在に対して、何か意味を感じ取ろうとして懸命になり、勝手に誤解して喜んだり悲しんだりするのだが、相手はそんなことはおかまいなしに裏切り続ける。特に、「バビロンの塔」や「地獄とは神の不在なり」の結末の、脱力っぷりはどうよ。最高だね。

レムよりも「わかりやすく理解不能な存在を描く」(!)チャンはすごい。

　SFに限らず、短編小説（短編映画も同様）には、アイディアの独創性とそれを簡潔かつ表現力豊かに作品化するための洗練された技術とが、同時に要求される。

　テッド・チャンがその両方を兼ね備えた作家であることは確かだ。山岸真氏の「解説」によると、2世の中国系アメリカ人で中国語はもう話せないらしいが、どうも漢字文化へのこだわりがあるように思われた。漢字を象形文字としてではなく、一瞬にして複雑な意味を伝えてしまう一種の図像、「ゲシュタルト」として見なしているのではないかと思う。表題作に出てくるエイリアンは、たった一つの文字で未来の出来事まで全て表してしまう特殊な意識と文化を持っているし、「理解」の設定は薬物実験によって人間の意識が拡大し、世界が「ゲシュタルト」として一瞬で捉えられるようになる話だ。

　現存の人類とは異質な世界観の提示はSFの得意とするところだが、チャンの場合は、「世界」全体を意味ある図形、或いは図像として意識するというところから出発しているようだ。それが人間の容貌に対して適応されると「顔の美醜について」のようにかなり日常的なテーマとなり、宗教的世界像に対して適用されると「バビロンの塔」のように別世界の宇宙像になる。そのヴァリエーションを楽しむだけでもこの短編集は十分堪能できる。
　表題作ではファーストコンタクトによる世界観の変容が主人公の人生に思わぬ悲哀をもたらすことになるのだが、その意識の変遷を語りのスタイルに巧みに反映させている辺り、傑作というにふさわしい出来である。
