科学が発達し、まるで魔法のようになってしまった超未来ファンタジーというシチュエーションから、山田正紀の宝石泥棒や宮崎駿の風の谷のナウシカに通じる世界を感じる。
その緻密に構築された世界観と、外見からは想像できない奥の深い（裏のある）登場人物たち、繰り返し挿入される劇中劇が、一度では読み切れない重層的な物語を構成する。
近年のファンタジーの流行からもっと注目されてもよいと思うのだが、なぜか知名度が低い不遇の大傑作。
私は、これよりも面白い本を読んだことがない。

　〈新しい太陽の書〉一作目。この傑作シリーズが日本ではいまひとつ知られていないらしいのが残念だ。間違いなくＳＦ・ファンタジーのオールタイム・ベストの一つ。
　もっとも、僕の場合この１巻目だけではそのすごさはわからなかった。割と普通の成長ファンタジーじゃないかと思った。でも２巻目以降、次第に世界の全貌が見えてくるにしたがってその緻密な構成に驚嘆した。ここまで綿密に異世界を作り上げた例は他にないんじゃないだろうか。張り巡らされた伏線が巧みに生かされ、世界の秘密が少しずつ明らかになっていく。良質の推理小説を読むようなスリルを感じた。
　魅力的な登場人物、エキゾチックな風俗、謎に満ちたストーリー。どれをとっても一級品だ。

高校生のころ初めて読んで以来、最も好きな本の一つ。10回以上読み返したと思う。優れた文学小説であると同時に、壮大なスケールの冒険小説でもある稀有な作品。
難解な部分はあるものの「ケルベロス...」よりはずっと読みやすいので、ウルフを始めて読む人はこちらから読んでもらう方がいいと思います。
