　ある作品がＳＦであるための最も重要な要素の一つとして，センス・
オブ・ワンダー（「驚きの感覚」とでも訳すのでしょうか？）を挙げて
いた人がいました。この作品は，まさにそのセンス・オブ・ワンダーに
満ちた物語です。

　くわしい内容の説明はひかえておきますが，この作品で提唱される，

ホモ・ゲシュタルト（集団有機体としての人間）という概念は，後年
様々な科学者や，芸術家の作品に影響を与えました（たとえば，石森章
太郎氏の『サイボーグ００９』）。

　アイデアもさることながら，作品全体を漂う不思議な雰囲気，巧妙な
ストーリー展開と，どれをとっても比類なき名作だと思います。

中学生の頃初めて読みました。残念ながら全く理解不能でした。

でも、何故かその後、何度か読み返してきました。もう４，５回かな？「後半だけ」とか「部分読み」を合わせると10回以上は手にしたかも。
そのたびに違った感触がある不思議な作品です。時には理解あるいは拒絶、否定。

決して読みやすい本ではないのです。だけど再読している。自分でも本当に理由が分かりません。

好きか？といわれると断言はできません。
でも、あれから20年、きっとまた読むのでしょう。そして、それでもまた新たな読後感があるはずです。

是非、未読の方、一読を。そして「あなたの「人間以上」」を見つけてください。

シオドア・スタージョンの『人間以上』は、なかなか良い。あるいは、それ程でもない。では無く、良く分からない。あるいは、好き。かに、その評価が分かれる作品のような気がします。そして、好きな人にとってのその評価はほとんど最大級となり得る大きな可能性を秘めているような気がします。10人に1人の確立なのか、100人に1人なのか、それは分かりませんが、好きになった人にとって、『人間以上』は、確実に、ずぅーと探していたものがようやく見つかったかのような喜びを与えてくれるでしょうし、同時に、その人にとっての、無人島に持って行くべき本を確実に一冊増やしてくれる。そういう作品だと思います。そして、それは、そのまま、シオドア・スタージョンのもうひとつの傑作『夢みる宝石』にも当て嵌ります。未読の方は、この両作品、試されてみる価値は十二分にあるのではないでしょうか。
