ハードボイルドの大御所チャンドラーの短編集。確かに文章は良い。ドライでキビキビしていて、人を惹き付けるインパクトがある。だが読み進むにつれて、何じゃこりゃという思いに変わり、ついには読まなきゃ良かったと思った。話の好き嫌いの問題ではない。話がありきたりだとか、ご都合主義にすぎるとか、筋立てが雑だとか…そういう次元の問題でもない。何と言うべきか…とにかく話の筋になっていない、物語になっていないのだ！　難解な純文学ならともかく、ミステリーでこんなのは初めて。チャンドラーの小説は、筋を追うのではなく、雰囲気を味わうものだ…という噂は聞いた事がある。それでも本当に文字通り、掛け値なしの意味で「雰囲気だけ」とは夢にも思わ!なかった。話の出来が悪いのならまだともかく、話が全く出来ていないなんて…もう２度と読みたくない。
