西川 一三
1918年、山口県に生まれる。1936年、福岡県立中学修猷館卒業後、満鉄大連本社に入社。41年、満鉄を退社し、張家口駐蒙大使館が主宰する興亜義塾に入塾。43年、同塾を卒業後、駐蒙大使館調査部勤務となり、中国西北部潜入を命ぜられ、内蒙古、寧夏、甘粛、青海、チベット、ブータン、西康、シッキム、インド、ネパール各地を潜行。50年、インドより帰国(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

第2次大戦末期、著者は陸軍の特殊教育を受けて、チベット方面の現地情報収集のため鎖国下のチベットに潜入する。中国に侵攻される前のチベットに到達した日本人は河口慧海以来ごく少数であり、貴重な記録である。チベット国王ですら国土の地図を持たない時代に、自らの足で歩き回って徐々に地図を作り上げて行く。町や集落の位置関係、人口、産物など多彩な情報のほとんどを頭に蓄積していったと思われるが、その莫大な情報量に驚かされる。中国、モンゴル、チベットに加え、潜入中に行き来したインド、ネパールの言語までマスターする恐るべき適応能力に、激動の時代を生き抜いたたくましい日本人像を見せつけられる。全3巻のフルバージョンには若干退屈な記述が続く部分もあるが、その辺りを省いた「抄」はスピード感がある。これを読んで当時のチベットに興味を持ったら、同時期に同じ目的で潜入していた木村肥佐夫による「チベット潜行10年」も面白い。

普通の人なら「抄」で十分です。チベットに半分住むような人だけが、全三巻を読んでください。
　どうしても比較してしまうのが河口慧海の「チベット旅行記」と佐藤優の「国家の罠」（外務省のラスプーチンと呼ばれて）。
　河口は仏教を知るため自ら困難なチベット入りを求めた求道の人であったのに対し、西川は第二次世界大戦の敗戦により、生き残るためやむを得ず蒙古からチベット・インドに至った訳であり、僧の姿をしてチベットを彷徨っていてもその志はずいぶん違いを感じる。それは西川の程度が低いというわけでは決して無く、河口慧海が傑出しすぎているからです。もし未読なら「チベット旅行記」をぜひ一読されることをお勧めします。
　もう一冊の「国家の罠」は、チベットとは何の関係もないのですが、ずいぶん有名な一冊なので内容もご存知の方も多いかと思いますが鈴木宗雄事件の関係者です。気迫のある外務省調査官というのがどんなもので国益を常に考えている気骨ある愛国者達（たとえ色々問題はあっても）であることがわかり考えさせてくれる本です。こちらは興味ある人は読んでみてください。
　そうそう、僧と偽っての旅行記には「安南三国旅行記」（絶版）があります。これはタイ・ラオス・ベトナムが舞台ですが、これもお勧めです。
