なんでもないようで何かが起こっているような。
実際ありえないような男女の四人の共同生活が、
こんなにもさらっと、自然に読めてしまえる。
なんでもない日常を書いているんですけど、それが不思議と心地よい☆

近所のちいさな猫のためにえさを置き、週末には競馬に行き、恋をするでもない「僕」と、僕の部屋に居候しつづける４人の男女のしずかな日常。こういう題材にまま臭う、過度のロマンチシズムも感傷もないところが心地いいです。続編「草の上の朝食」もきっと読みたくなります。

5.0 out of 5 stars 〈非日常〉をこしらえずに内側から〈日常〉を救い上げる魔法のひしゃく（＝文体）, 2007/8/12
　保坂和志は、普通の人だったら「明確な主張」として受け取ってしまいそうな会話を、「主張ではない何か」に変質させてしまうような文章を書く。それは一見悪いことのように思えるけれど、実はその文章は同時に「無目的のひとりごと」として忘れられそうな文章すら、「ひとりごとではない何か」に変質させてしまう力をも持ちあわせている。

　この「なんでもないほうの会話を、小説という制度の中にヒョイっと掬い上げてしまう力」にこそ、保坂の本領がある。

　誰もが日々、無自覚に観察しているはずの、一見なんでもない日常会話の時間を、一本の「思考の糸」でかろうじてぬいとめ、小説の一部として丁寧に回収する。保坂がやっているのは、そういう確信にみちた作業だ。

　しかも〈日常〉を語る際に私たちがしばしば対置してしまう陳腐な〈非日常〉なんか、この小説にはどこにも存在しない。〈日常〉の “外側” に何ものも置かないという格律〔ルール〕を自らで設定し、それをキッチリ守った上で、彼の褒め称えたい日々の情景を、生活のいわば “内側” から掘り崩していく。そしてその掘り崩した情景を、ひとつひとつ、独特にチューンされた日本語によって淡々と汲み取っていく。その作業を確実にこなすために使われる保坂の日本語は、単なる日本語のようで、これもまた「日本語のかたちをした別の何か」になってしまっている。

　そんな「よく出来た“ひしゃく”」みたいな日本語でなければ、日常言語の網の目からこぼれてしまうものを掬い取ることができないと判断したからこそ、保坂は保坂自身の日本語をでっちあげたのだと思う。幸せなことに、このでっちあげられた〈文体〉によって可能になったことは、保坂の選んだライフワークと一致しているらしい。そうやって頭で徹底して計算しつくされた〈文体〉には、抗いがたい魅力がある。

　こんなに明確で冷徹な目的に基づいて作られた日本語を読めたのは、素晴らしい体験だった。
