本書のタイトルになっている「海洋史観」とは、著者が多大な影響を受けたという、マルクスの唯物史観と梅棹忠夫の生態史観を基礎に、Ｆ.ブローデルらによる継続的な対外交易がもたらす物産複合の変容による社会変化という視点を加味した歴史観だ。冒頭で述べられる以下のテーゼが、この歴史観を大変うまく表現していると思う。「近代はアジアの海から誕生した。より正確にいえば、海洋アジアからのインパクト(経済的外圧)に対するレスポンス(生産革命)として、日本とヨーロッパに新しい文明が出現した。」

著者は、自身の研究テーマである綿織物をとりあげて説明していく。それまで毛織物を着ていたヨーロッパ人が、海洋アジアの物産の代表であるインド製の薄くて美しい綿織物に魅了され、その輸入が急速に増加する。そこで新大陸に自生していた綿花を栽培化して、それを原材料とする綿織物工業を起こして労働生産性を大きく向上させ、資本集約型の生産革命である産業革命を成しとげた。つまり環大西洋交易圏を形成して、その中での自給体制を築いたわけだ。それに対して日本では、貿易を大幅に縮小し自国内で自給自足する「鎖国」体制を築いていく。熱帯でのみ栽培できた綿花だが、温帯でも栽培可能な品種が開発された結果、換金作物としての綿花栽培が日本に急速に普及する。そして近世江戸社会は、労働集約型の生産革命である「勤勉革命」によって、土地生産性が世界一の経済社会を形成するのだが、海洋アジアの物産に対する依存を脱したという点で、近代世界システムと対等の文明史的意義を持っているという。

また本書は、全体構成が起承転結に沿っていてストーリー的な面白さもあり、経済史の分野の専門的な内容を含んでいる割には大変読みやすくかった。

まず、過去示された史観に対する批判と、その後の展開に感嘆しました。
まず、唯物史観は、ある意味西欧的な世界観に囚われ、どのような文化的背景があろうとも、いずれの社会も単線的な発展段階を辿るとしていました。著者は、まずこの史観が、マルクス自身によっても「適用できない場合がある」としていたエピソードを取り上げ批判します。
次に、生物学には「進化」のような単線的発展だけでなく、「適応」という考え方があることを紹介し、そこから日本の研究者が導き出した生態学史観を紹介し、評価します。
さらに今まで歴史研究の中で見過ごされてきた「海からのインパクト」という新たなファクターを取り入れ、著者のライフワークである「海洋史観」を展開し、日本と西洋がDeveloped Countriesとなった理由を明らかにします。
海洋史観のダイナミックさと、海からのインパクト（貿易）が陸地での物産複合（文化）に与える影響の大きさには、感嘆するばかりです。
著者はこれまでも、海洋史観については多くの著書を出しており、この本と内容が重なる点も多くあります。この本は、いわば、それらの著書を踏まえた中間報告といったところでしょう。

なお、個々の歴史については、著者の過去の著作物や、示されている参考書を読めば、詳しく知ることが出来ます。それを読めば読むほど、感動も大きくなるでしょう。
