　デビュー作、銃の次に読んだ作品。
　銃も甘さの残るできばえであったが、それを凌駕する面白さであった。
　これも面白かったのだが、もう一押し足りない。
　序盤はよかったのだが、第二の手記もまだいいが、第三の手記の展開はどうだろう。
　いくらなんでも、少しベタすぎやしないですか？　もう少し煮詰めた書いてもよかったと思う。
　いわゆる、罪の解放をテーマにすえた作品だと思うが、掘り下げが足りない。文学の価値は答えを明示するのではなく、問いを発するものだと僕は思う。
　その点で別に問題はないのかもしえないけれど、さてさて……

所謂動機なき殺人を扱ったもので、流行ものといえばそれまでだが、なかなかうまく纏めてある。一人称で語られる「手記」という体裁をとっている。主人公の「私」は、「異邦人」のムルソーと「罪と罰」のラスコル二コフの両方の要素を併せ持っている。病気によって世界観が崩壊し、そこから生ずる虚無と絶望が人を殺人に向かわせるという設定だが、今ひとつ説得力に欠けるし、心理の掘り下げが浅いという気がする。展開もややご都合主義の面がなきにしもあらずである。最後も、ややセンチに流れて、「キレイ」なってしまっている感じがある。人がもって生まれた「業」のようなものを、もうすこし凄みをもって描ければよいと思うが。だが、20代でこれだけのものを書ける才能はたいしたものだと思う。この人の他の作品も読んでみたくなった。

　とにかくここまで独自のテイストを持ち、自身のスタイルを確立している、２０代の作家というのは、私からしてみれば天才としか思えないです。
　物語はとにかく、いつもの中村作同様、とにかく暗くて湿っぽい。大病を患った主人公がある殺人を起こし、そのことについての自信の精神の変遷を、そこそこの出来事で話をつなげながら、描いているというものです。
　正直、「遮光」「土の中の子供」など、過去の中村作がいまひとつ面白くなかったと言う人にはお勧めできません。
　今では珍しい純文学に限りなく近い、ミステリー小説だと思います。
