　『ポーの話』という素朴なタイトルと、その装丁の美しさにまず目を奪われました。　黒の地に描かれた、カラフルなのにしっとりと柔らかな印象のイラスト。うなぎ、飛んでいるのは鳩？、花、裏表紙にはうみうし。作品の世界を象徴するかのような月。　
　
　＜きれいはきたない。きたないはきれい＞……いしいしんじさんの作品を読むと、いつもこの言葉が頭の隅に浮かんできます。　
　この話も混沌としていて、自分の頭がいつもよりもっと悪くなったんじゃないか？という気がしてきます。　
　ポーの母たちである、泥の川に生きる「うなぎ女」のありさまは一種異様です。でも、ポーが生まれる場面やポーに対するうなぎ女たちの愛情は、原始的な母性を感じさせます。愛され守られる存在として生まれたポーが印象的。　　ポーという存在は何かに喩えることができません。純真無垢といえばニュアンスがちょっと違うと私は思いますし、空っぽというのでもない。あえていうならば“何も書かれていない真っ白な紙”だと感じました。
　“メリーゴーランド”、“ひまし油”、“天気売り”などの人々との出会いによって、ポーは人間が持つべき「感情」や「思い」を少しずつ理解していきます。　
　このポーの変化も粘着質な感じで、遭遇する出来事を逐一見て触って、相手の言葉を反芻して心にしまい込んでというような具合です。
　悲惨な出来事、汚く賤しい言葉や仕打ち。ポーは川の流れとともに変わっていきます。川から海へ。水、うねり、流れ。その中で出会う者たち。　
　時代や場所も不明な物語の中、ポーが感じることをなぞりながら、第三部の老人達の心根にぐっときました。　
　説教臭いと感じた天気売りの言葉も、読みおえてみればポーと物語に対して必要なものだったと納得です。
　うなぎ女たちの「スフスフ、スフスフ」という響きがいつまでも心に残っています。

温かくてぬるい泥の河の中に
ぷかぷか浮いたような気持ちで
楽しむことが出来ました。
宮本輝の泥の河は、冷たくて流れが速そうだけど
ポーの話の中では、洪水の中でも、なんだか温かそうに思えるのです。

のんびり出来るときに読むのがおすすめ

泥まみれのウナギを捕まえる生業の女たちから、泥の川に産み落とされた少年ポー。彼が川を下りながら、さまざまな出会いや経験をして、最後は、大きなウナギと・・・。さまざまな経験っていったって、いしいワールドでの出来事だから、目がまん丸、口はあんぐり。ところが、さすが京都大学文学部仏文学科専攻の語り口。丁寧な文章ですわ。なぜか、そこに自分がいて、ポーの横顔を眺めている気分になってくるから不思議。不思議。どこまでも優しいポーといしいさんの視線。母であるうなぎ女たちのポーを守り、愛する姿。真摯な瞳で、表裏なく他者と関わるポーの姿。
汚く、気持ち悪いと差別批判されるものにあえて光を当てて、どうどうと流れる水の存在が、力強く逞しく、どこまでも続く生命の持続を感じさせてくれます。今が旬の作家さんです。一度堪能あれ。
