　「風流冷飯伝」「退屈姫君伝」に続く３部作の最終編にあたる。但し前２作がユーモア小説だったのに対し、こちらはシリアス。

　「姫君伝」のお仙がこの本のヒロインだが、彼女の運命は過酷すぎる気がする。設定にもかなり無理があり（特に父と娘の出生の秘密がほぼ同じという部分）、倉地政之助の扱いが前２作とは大分違うので、違和感を感じる。それなりに面白く読めるし、前２作とは切り離して、シリアス系のちょっと妖しいミステリーとしてよくできている。

　しかしわたしは「退屈姫君伝」の方が良くできていると思う。肩の力が抜けているのに、構成は緻密だ。この作者はユーモア小説の方が向いていると思う。

『風流冷飯伝』『退屈姫君伝』 に続く第三弾の作品だが、前作までは「粋」で「だじゃれ」で、面白みがあったが、今回の作品は、山田風太郎、柴田錬三郎、五味康祐などの系統を意識したような展開になり、ちょっとシリアスっぽい、同じ人が書いたのかと思うような作品だが、これはこれで面白いのだが、この手の作品を書く作家は今までも居たし、これからもたくさん出るだろうから、作者の米村圭伍氏には、前作のような作品を書いて欲しいものです。
後半、米村氏は直次郎を自分に似せたのだろうか？
