なんとなくよくある歴史ファンタジーを想像していたので、
日本の中で鎖国し、国家として江戸が独立しているという
ありそうでなかった設定は新鮮でした。
途中で飽きさせず、時にはミステリー調になりながら話は進みます。
ただタイトルにもなっているゴメスですが、登場シーンのインパクト
のわりに、全体における印象が多少薄いのが気になりました。

しかしまだはっきりと明かされていない謎もあり、
続編が出そうな気配もします。楽しみ！

　日本の中に、鎖国国家「江戸」が存在する近未来。病床の父に頼まれて、辰次郎は「江戸」へ赴く。そこで奉行所の一員として難事件に臨む。
　近未来の鎖国国家「江戸」という設定は、おおげさにいえば時代小説に新たな可能性を開いた。なんでもありなのだから。時代小説の最大の制約は、歴史的事実を変えられないことだ。それが、何でもありになったのだ。新型生物兵器の開発や、引きこもりの問題を、時代小説に盛り込むことができるようになったのだ。
　基本的にはユーモア小説なのだが、人情あふれる人間交流が胸を温かくする。ゴメスをはじめとした人物造形もうまい。それに、時代小説でちょくちょくお目にかかるジェンダー差別を、さらりと解消しているところも、確かな人権意識に支えられている。
　ちなみにＳＦではマイク・レズニックが「キリンヤガ」で、小惑星の形でアフリカの一部族について同様の設定をしている。

日本の中に独立国家として存在する江戸。５歳の時一度江戸を離れた
辰次郎は、１５年後格別のはからいで再び江戸へ。金春屋のゴメスは
辰次郎に、鬼赤痢の正体を暴けと命じるが・・・。

１５年前、鬼赤痢にかかった子供の中で助かったのは、辰次郎ひとり
だけだった。なぜ辰次郎は助かったのか？すべては辰次郎の記憶に
かかっている。鬼赤痢の正体、そして治療方法。それがこの作品の
鍵になっているのだが、分かってしまえばそれほどの驚きはない。
むしろ平凡。だが、日本の中に江戸が独立した国として存在すると
いう発想は面白かった。まさに古きよき時代の象徴。そこに生息する
（？）ゴメスは、ちょっと漫画的すぎる気もした。タイトルが生か
されていないのでは？
