堀口大學の翻訳作品中、特に出色の作品である｡ボードレールの原詩を素材に、斯くまで美しき詩集を作り上げた堀口の天才には脱帽する。当然、「意訳の芸術」であって、ボードレールの意思をそのまま反映した「芸術の直訳」ではない。ボードレールの原詩そのものを味わいたい人は、直接フランス語で読まれるべきであろう（大体、フランス語を韻律と雰囲気を「正しく和訳」することには無理がある）。

フランス語が読めたらボードレールが読みたい。そんな風に思って学生時代フランス語を一生懸命勉強していました。でも結局読めませんでした。堀口大学の翻訳以上になりませんでした。でも、この日本風味のボードレールのどこがいけないんでしょうか？オリジナルは結局オリジナルじゃないか？翻訳は翻訳でいいじゃないか？そんな風に情けなく開き直るワタクシでした。

作品としては僕にとって満足するものです。
しかし読みにくい！印字がはっきりしていなところがあったりして見にくいです。
旧漢字を使っているので尚更です。
まあ初版が古いのでしょうがないのかもしれないし、岩波の文庫本ではよくあることですが・・・
しかし現代漢字に直してあったら、とても読みやすいと思います。
あと、印刷をきれいに。
そこらへんがなんか工夫というか気配って、若い人にも読みやすくしてほしいなと訴えてみます。
