　本書のレビューに関しては上巻側で既に書いた通りだ。

　天地創成　下巻の白眉は　実は　訳者あとがきではないかとひそかに思う。単行本段階のあとがきと　文庫になった際のあとがきと二つ載せているが　どちらも　訳者の思い入れと　読者へのメッセージに満ちている。

　特に後者の後書きで　訳者は「本書の真の主人公は　『科学的方法』だったのだ。シンは科学的方法をみんなに知ってほしかった」と喝破している。この「読み取り」は　僕にも実に腑に落ちるものがあった。実際　本書でシンが繰り返し描いているのは「科学的とはどういうものなのか」という　極めて哲学的でもある話である。

　これは　別に　宇宙論だけではない。僕らの日常にも　十分通用する話だ。例えば　セブンイレブンが唱える「仮説と検証」という言葉にも　「科学的」という響きが伴っている。
　宇宙論の本で　コンビニの話を持ち出すのも　下世話かもしれないが　僕らの日々で「科学的とは何か」を考えるには　下世話な自分にひきつけて考えない限り　意味をなさないことも確かなのだ。また　それこそが著者の希望であろうし　訳者の期待なのではないかと僕は思う。

　それにしても大変勉強になった。

本書（上下巻）では、宇宙創成の謎に挑戦してきた人類史、科学史にスポットを当てる。古代ギリシャに始まった天文学。地球、月、太陽の大きさや距離を推定した古代天文学者に始まり、暗黒の中世での停滞を乗り越え、天動説を覆したコペルニクス、ガリレオ。初期地動説が生み出す誤差を解消する理論を打ち出したケプラー。ニュートン力学を超え、相対性理論を生み出したアインシュタイン。彼の生涯２つの誤りの一つである静的宇宙モデルを覆したビッグバン宇宙モデルの設立まで、事細かに解説する。
　さすがサイモン・シンと思わせる見事な描写は、読むものを引き付けて離さない。本書で書かれていることは、すべて良く知られた事実であるにもかかわらず、それを一同に系統立てて説明する手法は流れるような心地よいリズムを生み出し、一気に読まずには入られない。すばらしい。

上巻で天動説から一挙に赤方偏位くらいまで行ってしまい、この先一体
どうなるのかなと思っていました。
下巻は「定常モデルかビッグバンモデルか」という議論を丹念に丹念に
辿り、とにかく丹念でした。
かつて、偉大なる科学的発見は、一人の偉大なる科学者によって達成さ
れましたが、今日では一人の業績に結実されるのは難しい。
陽が当たった人、当たらなかった人。出し抜いた人、出し抜かれた人。
無視された人、奇跡のように発掘された人。
まるで映画のエンドロールのようです。
それら「死屍累々」とでも言えそうな土台の上に、最先端理論が築かれ、
これからも築かれ続けることを予想させてくれる、充実した本でした。
