5.0 out of 5 stars 理不尽な求愛行動に次第に崩壊していく主人公, 2005/11/19
　子どもを乗せた気球が上昇してしまう事故現場に偶然恋人のクラリッサと居合わせた主人公のジョー。その場に居合わせた人たちとなんとか気球を地面につなぎとめようとするが、1人がロープにつかまったまま気球とともに上昇、墜落死する。その夜、ジョーのもとへ現場に居合わせた男パリーから電話がかかってくる。「愛している」と。
　見ず知らずの男から執拗に続けられる宗教的な求愛行動。手紙、見張り。まったくの理不尽な行動に当初、たいした危機感も抱かなかったジョーだが、次第のその理不尽さに内面から追い詰められ、生活さえも破壊されていく…。
　次第に崩壊していくジョーの生活、理不尽さが次第に意味づけされていく過程がみごとに描かれていて、その手腕はみごと。読み応えのある小説だ。
　イアン・マキューアンは密かに注目している作家の1人だが、納得の1冊。本書は映画化されていて邦題名は『Jの悲劇』。

ある事件を元に描かれる、様々な愛を書いた秀作。
なにかと今注目の作家、マキューアンだけど私は初読。読みにくそうなイメージがあったので構えて読んでみたら、意外に読みやすい。精巧で緻密な文体、難のあるテーマを軽々と読ませてしまう筆力はさすがだなぁと思った。
ストーリーだけを追うとありがちなストーカー物になってしまうところだけど、そうならない。
狂気の男パリーの出現によって、次第に崩れていく主人公ジョー。理解を示してくれない恋人クラリッサへの苛立ち、落ちこぼれの科学者である彼ゆえの落ち方というか、精神の乱れ方の過程を巧く書いている。周辺の登場人物の描写も丁寧に書かれてる。
変質的な男の一方的な愛の話であり、些細な事から崩れだすカップルの愛の話であり、夫が死んだ事で妄想に駆られる妻の話でもあり、多層的な読み方ができる。
なんだか読み終えた後、凄く切なくなった。

サスペンスミステリー小説。筋書きはいいのだが、あまりに、もったいぶった回りくどい文体で、台無し。サスペンスには緊張感と雰囲気が不可欠。この作家にはそれを描く能力が無い。所々に手に汗握る展開もあるのだが、やはり冗長な文体で台無しに。特に序盤の部分はかったるい。序盤を乗り切れば、まあ、読める。このストーリー展開を、例えばサスペンスの名手ウィリムアイリッシュ＝コーネルウールリッチならどんなに見事に描いただろうか。何度も出てくる排泄の描写も興ざめ。何のためにこんなことを書くのだろうか。読み終わっても特に何も残らない。暇があったら読めばいい、というレベル。
