「われわれは互いのことをほとんど知らないのだ」（本文より）

人は、社会を生きるうえで、本当の思いをモラルでコーティングすることを必要とする。
公共の利益のため、芸術のため、政治的健全さのため。
ここに出てくる男たちは、新聞紙編集長、音楽家、外交官などの社会的地位が高い人ばかり。
彼らはそれぞれがそれぞれの倫理に従って行動する。
だがその真ん中にあるものは、ただの嫉妬、死んでいなくなった女をめぐる嫉妬の渦巻きである。

みんな、自分を正当化するのに忙しくて、言い訳に満ちた世界。
だから最後の最後で、いきなり本音が出てきてびっくりする。

ものすごく現代的な物語。
軽いタッチで辛辣なことをさらりというのが、なかなかイギリス的なユーモアだと思う。
えせモラルをぼこぼこにする、そんなビターテイストを味わいたい人に。

つい読んでしまいますが、個人的にどうしても好きになれないイアン・マキューアンです。イギリス的と言って片付けてよいのか、物事の輪郭だけをさらりとなぞったような、よく言えば精緻で贅肉を落とした、あの文体がどうしても体質的に受け付けません。タイトルや筋立てから、当の文体まで、その巧さを認めるにやぶさかではありませんが。それだけスタイリッシュなんでしょう。

欧州の人の心情をよく表しているということで読み始めた本。
イギリス人の話。
面白かったです。恋人をめぐる２人親友の人生の乱高下が心理描写とともに描かれている。他の２人の人生の高下も描かれている。

小説は小説として、市井の人との乖離はどの程度なのだろう。日本の小説の記述と日本の市井の人々との距離感から類推すると、ダイブ違うのだろうなとわかる。ただ、どこが突飛な部分として小説に記されているのかは、まだ理解できていない。
しかし、人はそんなに浮気せんだろ、と思うのだけど。まぁ、小説だからね。
