5.0 out of 5 stars まさに、レ・ミゼラブル。, 2004/1/7
バルジャンはじめ、登場人物の心の機微がしっかりと書かれており、
心から感動の出来る作品になっています。クライマックスはまさに無常。
感涙にむせぶこと必至です。

ところで皆さんは、レ・ミゼラブルを
「罪人のバルジャンが宿を借りた司祭の家から銀の燭台を盗み出し、
後日、つかまるが司祭から許され、改心する。」

っていうような”あらすじ”のお話だと、お思いではありませんか？
それは間違いではありませんが、これから後に続く壮大で感動的なお話の、
ただの”序章のあらすじ”に過ぎません。本編はこの後始まるのです。
ぜひ、その後のバルジャンを、お確かめください。

さて、この作品にはあわせて「モンテクリスト伯」をお勧めします。

時代背景が極めて近いため、どちらから読んでも、よりいっそう
作品の舞台となった時代の息遣いを身近に感じられるでしょう。

「ああ無情」を子供のころに読んでいたのでジャン・ヴァルジャンの話かと思っていたのだけど、それだけではなくて、ウィーン体制下で働く人々や社会の様子を生き生きと描いた群像小説であった。ユゴーはナポレオン後の世界をこの大長編の中に真空パックでガッチリ封じ込めた。ジャン・ヴァルジャンの周辺で起こる数々のドラマチックな修羅場の演出もとてもカッコよくて最高に素敵だが、途中途中で突然ガーッと長々書かれる時代の細部の執念深い記述もまた、本当に魅力的なのである。個人的に好きなのは、パリの浮浪児たちが、飢えと寒さと未来の無さの中にありながら、上を向いて希望を失わず、陽気に生きる姿を描いた章。底抜けの明るさに励まされるのである。

レ･ミゼラブルが私達に示すもの、それは人間肯定と、ヨーロッパ世界における神と人間との距離感であると思う。

人間肯定については、この物語はあまりにも有名であり、いまさらそれをここでくどくどしく書く必要はない。しかし一言いうならば、迫害され、虐げられた小さな魂がジャン・バルジャンに出会う前、その小さな魂には「愛する機会が与えられていなかった」とはすさまじい洞察であったといえる。愛とはそこにあるものではなく、機会が必要であるとは、私は気づいていなかった。それだけでも、この本は偉大である。

そして神と人間との距離感は、この物語を貫くもうひとつの大きな柱である。孤独ですさんだジャン・バルジャンが、たちなおるきっかけを得たのは神の教えをもたらす者の前であり、ジャン・バルジャンが小さな魂に出会ったのも、神の御手によるものであるとしてある。このような絶対的な神の存在は、我々日本人には理解しがたく、しかしながら物語りの流れが、その存在を私に納得させたことも、ここに告白しなければならないだろう。

今まで気づかなかった多くのものに、気づかせてくれた小説でもある。
