「アンをめぐる人々」というタイトルですが、基本的に関わりのある人は登場しません。同じ時代・同じ島の中の別の誰かの物語。あるいはアンとスーザンが伝え合った噂話を集めたもの、と読むこともできるかも。しっとりした味わい深い短編集です。ひとつひとつの短編から映画ができそう。「茶色の手帳」には、アンとダイアナが登場。口うるささに二人が疎んでいた老女の、若かりし頃の悲恋。「平原の美女タニス」は、インディアンとの混血の少女が主人公。激しく気高い美女として描かれています。完全英国調のモンゴメリワールドに異人種が登場するのは珍しい。「夢の子供」「ヘスターの幽霊」は、幽霊の登場する話。これも異色ですね。

「アンの友達」に続くアヴォンリーの人々第２弾！こちらも笑いと涙の短編集となっています。いずれもモンゴメリのあたたかい視線から綴られたもので、読んだあとは優しい気分になれること請け合います。ただユーモアがあるだけではなくて、人間の本質を真っ正面から描いた作品です。モンゴメリといえば、「赤毛のアン」があまりにも有名ですが、アンの周りの人々もいろんなドラマを持っているのです。この作品で、ますますモンゴメリがどれほど素晴らしい描写力を持っているかがわかります。
