小学校の頃、読んだ覚えがあったのですが、引っ越しでどこかに
無くしてしまって、そのままになっていましたが、この文庫を読んで、
改めて感動してしまいました。

初めて読んだときはジュディは「おおきなおねえさん」だったのに、
いつの間にか抜かしてしまって、初めて読んだときとは違った感動を
味わうことができました。
（いつの間にかジャーヴィス・ペンデルトンのような年になっていたので…）

一人の少女が成長していく様を、作者の文学感を交えて瑞々しく描いています。
ジュディが語るように「自分の知っていることを書くことが最も感動を与える」
というのは本当にその通りです。ジュディとは全く境遇の違う作者ですが、
「真実を創作する」事の大切さを自分に言い聞かせているようですね。

ウェブスターがこの作品を仕上げて数年後に亡くなってしまったのは本当に残念なことです。
（続・あしながおじさんも残してくれましたが）

原作を幸福に彩る空気をさらに高めた翻訳を、児童翻訳家の大御所でいらっしゃる松本恵子さんがなされています。

美しい日本語で語られる、孤児のジュディーの楽しすぎる学園日記。何ごとにも負けない心、女の子らしい発見に満ちた日々、しっかりと地に足をつけて生きようとする雄々しいまでの彼女の姿！　読んでいる間、私は自分自身が「あしながおじさん」であるかのように彼女の幸福を願い、喜びました。

ある朝、頬に「えくぼ」を見つける日の日記には思わず胸が熱くなります。

孤児が幸運をつかみながら、それだけではなく、努力によって得ていく人間性。
最後はハッピーエンド。学園で起こすどたばた喜劇。

挿絵のかわいさも作品の一部だと思う。単純な線で書かれた挿絵が、あしながおじさんの特徴をよく表現している。

登場人物が文学を書くのは、若草物語、赤毛のアンと同様で、主人公の思いは、著者の思いとも重なるので心の機微が分かりやすい。

ps.
原作のDady Long Legは、足長お父さんという意味ではないだろうか。
あしながおじさん(dady long leg)が好きなら、
続（dear enemy:拝啓　敵さん)も気に入ると思う。

作者は、マークトウェインの姪の娘とのことである。
作者が自分の子供を産んで、すぐに亡くなったのは、あまりにも悲しい物語。
作者の自伝があれば読みたい。
