本作は実際に起こった事件を元にして書かれた作品で、ガルシアマルケス特有の幻想的な雰囲気を織り交ぜた表現はあまり見られず、むしろ緻密に、よく練られたプロット、圧倒的な構成力の上に、綿密に慎重に文章を乗っけていき作り上げられたような印象を受ける。個人的には「百年の孤独」のように神話的世界が思いっきり爆発している作品の方が好みであるが、マルケス自身が本作を自分の最高傑作だと述べているように、民衆の心に潜む憎悪や差別感情を決して声高に表現するのではなく、巧みに描きだしたこの作品はさすがマルケスといった感じである。

初めて読んだときは衝撃を受けました。

そしてまた読み返して、また衝撃を受けました。

すばらしいです。

ある街でおこった１つの悲しい事件。それをみごとな小説に書き上げました。

短いのに突き刺さります。

そしてえぐられます。

本を読んで衝撃を受けたい人はどうぞ。

同名の映画を先に見たが、原作はその何倍もパワーがある。ノーベル文学賞と聞くと私のような未熟者はつい身構えるが、これは敷居が低い。書き出しから引きこまれ、ページをめくるのももどかしく前のめり姿勢で一気に読んだ。むごたらしい殺人事件を扱いながら何やら滑稽極まりない筆致に、作者の人間観察のすごみを感じ、震えながらも笑わずにはいられない。テーマは深い深いところにあるのだろうが、まずは面白く読んでいいのでは。値段も安く、薄くて軽い。でも読み終わると「小説って・・すごい。面白い」と最高級の充実感を感じる１冊だ。
