恋をすると不安になるものです。この人は自分のことを好きなんだろうかそれともきらいなんだろうかとその人の一挙一動のすべてにそういいう自分に対するメッセージを探してしまいます。私は今恋をしているので、登場人物のそんな不安な心の動きにとても共感できました。ツルゲーネフが描く登場人物の恋する心の動きを、そうそう、そういうのわかるわかる、って感じで読み進みました。恋している人にオススメの本です。

小説を読みながら絵が浮かんでくる作品はそう多くはないと思います。
この作品はその数少ないうちの一つ。シーンごとに絵をかこうと思えばきっとかけるはず。油絵の重たさが合うシーンもあれば、水彩画のように透明感溢れるシーンもあり、色鉛筆で描きたくなるような柔らかなシーンもある。
翻訳本は翻訳者によって与えるものが違うこともあると思います。他の翻訳者がどのような「筆さばき」でこの作品を描くのか興味があります。
心に残る作品。懐かしさ、暖かさ、痛み、身震いするような冷たさ、淋しさ、様々な感覚が「恋」というものを思いながらよみがえる作品。

この小説の主人公はぼくだ、と思った。
おそらく19世紀のロシアの読者もそう感じたのだろう。

その変わらなさを思うと涙が出た。
