小学生の頃、小学生向けに書かれた本を読んだが、同じく無人島に流される「十五少年漂流記｣に比べ、もう一つ好きになれず、繰り返し読むこともなかった記憶がある。

何故だろうと思って読み返してみたが、その理由が分かった。１８世紀初頭のキリスト教徒の世界観に基づく小説だからである。放蕩息子が、無人島でひどい目に会う内に、神に目覚めるというあたりはまだよいとして、黒人奴隷はあたりまえ、原住民は野蛮人、キリスト教徒は未開人を教化してやるのだ、無人島ですら国王きどりになる、その世界観に違和感を感じていたのだと思う。

とはいえ、主人公の心の描写には切実なものがある。例えば「苦境から救われるのよりも、罪から救われる方が遥かに有難いことを感じる｣とか、「自分の境遇を･･･より辛いものと比較して神に感謝したならば、人間の間にどれだけ苦情の種が減ることになるだろう｣など、他にも多数あるが、このあたりは、小学生の自分にはその価値が分からなかったのだろう。

いずれにしても、アウトドア的な冒険小説としてではなく、人生の真理に迫った小説として読むといいと思いました。

子供の頃夢中で読んだ「ロビンソン・クルーソー」を、初めて原書の忠実な訳で読んだ。
子供の頃は、島でのサバイバル生活に目を奪われ、子供部屋の一角に「食料と道具」を溜め込んで、親に叱られたりした。
（叱られたのは正確に言うと、しまいこんだパンが青カビの塊になって発見されたからだ。）

"本物"のロビンソンは、牧歌的なサバイバル物語ではない。
第一、主人公がイヤな奴だ。
恵まれた境遇によりかかり、何をするでもなく、早く簡単に良い結果を出すことばかり考えている。
熟考することなく、場当たり的。
何かを決意してもちょっとおだてられると、すぐに節を屈してしまう。
自分は何もしないくせに、他人には忠実であることを望む。

そして有色人種に対する理不尽な優越感。
この態度、この語調はどこかで見たことがある、と思ったら。
「カラカウア王のニッポン仰天旅行記」の著者、ハワイ王の随行を勤めた白人と同じだ。

「ガリバー旅行記」は子供向けの本と"本物"とでは、主題が異なることを知る人も多く、そのため"本物"を読む人も多いだろうが、

ロビンソン漂流記の"本物"を読む人は少ないのではないだろうか。
子供の頃「無人島ごっこ」をした人に、是非いちど読んで欲しい。

必要な品をもって難破船から脱出、家を建て、種をまき、野生の山羊をつかまえ、原住民と二人っきりの生活が始まり、そして救出されて故郷へ帰り着くまで、無人島での生活に子供の頃は夢中になりました。

大人になって読んだときは「これがあんなに夢中になったのと同じお話？」と思いました。中産階級の若者が親の意見を聞かずに家を飛び出し、一旦奴隷になったり、南米で成功するも懲りずにまた航海へ出で難破します。

無人島では聖書から神の意思を確信し、自給自足の生活を立て上げます。また、（この時代の価値観ですが）原住民を教育し、無人島での生活を植民地経済に当てはめて解釈していきます。
消息を絶ってから帰還までの南米農園の収穫、為替、銀行利子、奴隷の処分までキチンと清算をつけているあたりシビアで興味深いです。
