青春時代に本がぼろぼろになるほど読み返しました。恋に苦しむ心を慰めてくれる本です。叶わぬ思いに苦しむのはあなただけではない、同じように悩み苦しんだ魂がある、ということを知ることにより慰められるはずです。

結末の是非が論議の対象になることがありますがそれ以前に純粋に恋に苦しむ若い心を描いたところにこの作品の類稀なる価値があるのだと信じています。恋しい人を思う1分1秒が身を刻まれるように辛いほど真剣にだれかを思ったことがある方になら必ず心に響く作品です。

　この作品の筋だけに目を奪われると、肝心なものがわからない。
　読み返すたび、ゲーテの言葉には何一つ無駄がない、ということがわかる。細かな描写一つ一つ、すべてが有機的につながり、作品に厚みと重みを与えている。
　こういう作品を、名作というのでしょう。

もし恋愛に形を与えることが出来るなら、その一つの形はもしかして
この「若きウェルテルの悩み」かも知れません。それほど、美しく若者の
報われない恋を描いた作品。タイトルだけ知って、満足してないで、
どうかご一読願いたい。こんなに繊細な感情を扱える人がこの世に存在
するということは悩めるあなたの救いになるかもしれません。

ところで、解説によると後年ゲーテは「『ウェルテル』は、厭世という
病的状態から生まれたものであり、あの時代の病的風潮であったセンチ
メンタリズムを文学的に記録した小説である」と言っている。
うむ。。。私も厭世的なセンチメンタリストである。。。うむ。まいった。
