スタンダールと言えば、｢赤と黒｣や｢パルムの僧院｣の著者として有名であるが、同時に、このような論文スタイルの著作も書いている。

内容は、恋愛感情が動的にどのように変化していくのかを、その発展段階に分けて、説明したものである。第一期における恋愛の特徴とは、そして、続いて生じるその反動とは何か、そして第二期では、などというように、恋愛の発展と消滅が説明されている。

小説家だから、幼稚な議論ではないかと思われるかもしれないが、私にはむしろ逆に思われた。このように、恋愛に対して、示唆に富む、経験的な規則性を考察できるからこそ、小説家としても、あのように有能であったのではないかと。

スタンダールの小説を楽しんだ高校生が、ついでにと思って、気軽に手に取り、読み始めたが、その内容を本当に理解し始めるには、かなり時間と経験が必要だった。小説と異なり、高校生には読みやすいとは思えないが、決して無理ではないので、試みていただきたい。後々、恋愛に苦しむときに、必ず役に立つはずだから。

恋愛には段階があります。スタンダールは何段階かに分けて恋愛を定義しています。表現の美しさに注目して読んでください

これはスタンダールがミラノの貴婦人に恋していた時に苦しみながら書いた物で、芸術が好きだというだけの理由でイタリアに滞在中の彼が暇で恋愛の事しか考えてないという事と、片思い（本人によると片思いではないが）に悩んでいて、あれこれ例をとって分析を試みてなんとか整理しようと苦悶してる事が伝わって来て、努力が共感できる。
恋に悩む理知的な同性の友人と延々恋愛の話をしている時の様な感じでただ、対話者がいつものように同年代の女性でなくて２００年前のフランス上流社会の作家になったという不思議な感覚。内容もやけに古風なところがあると思えば、時代を超えた普遍的な部分も結構あり、納得したり笑えたりもする。
二巻（本書中盤）の地域性とそのメンタリティーが恋愛に与える影響などはかなり詳細に及ぶ国毎の文化比較が絡んで来て、私のようにヨーロッパに住む者には実に面白いが、日本に住む人には単なる知識として受け入れるしかないから、あまり面白くなかもしれない。
小説ではないのでぐいぐい引っ張られる様には読めないので、読むなら忙しい時ではなく暇な時を御勧めします。
