この作品は内面へ内面へ向かうヘッセの作風が最も色濃く出ている。ヘッセというと『車輪の下』がどうしてもいちばん有名であるが、この本があまり読まれていないのは残念な事である。シッダールタが真の悟りに達するまでの過程を、シッダールタの悩みや苦しみを含め丁寧に描いた作品である。心理描写の良さと、インド哲学を深く理解したうえで組み立てられた作者独自の哲学世界が味わえる、小説としても良くまとまっている作品。

この本は人間の一生においての課題である｢自己実現｣をテーマにして書かれたものである。ヘッセ自身、自己実現を人生において、１番重要視していて、それをテーマにした本を幾つも発表している。例えば、その１つに｢デミアン｣がある。この本では、主人公が自己実現欲求を起こし、その欲求を満たすものを、迷いながらも人の力も借りて、なんとか見つける。何か直線的に自己実現に立ち向かっていく感じがしたが、シッダールタでは、グニャグニャと円を描く曲線だった。

その理由は、主人公が自己の追求を求める世界で生きるだけでなく、その世界から抜け出し、自己実現を全く重要視しない世界の中に入って生きた点にある。2つの精神世界に入口と出口があり、主人公はその２つの世界を入口から入り出口から出ながら行き来する。この何か曲線的な世界の変化をもとにして生じる、主人公の心や生き方の変化及び、全く忘れていた自己の内面を思い出していく中で到達していく自己実現の仕方に、デミアンより深いものを感じた。私はこの本がヘッセの自己実現について書かれた作品中で最高のものと勝手に思う。

物語の後半で、ゴーヴィンダに再開したシッダールタが
言ったことが印象に残っている。

たしか
さぐり求めてばかりだと、目標に取り付かれるので、
何も見出すことができなくなるし、何も心に受けいれられなくなるよ。
というようなことだった。

目標があるから、がんばれる。ということは、よく言われるし
もちろんそれで、うまくいくことは多い。
しかし目標があるから、かえって見えなくなってしまうことも
多いのだろうと思う。

人間がすごいのは、目標が達成できることより、
失敗したり、挫折したり、不安を抱いたりできることの方ではないか。
これは能力だ。
あと飽きるって言うのもすごい能力だと思う。
飽きるから、他のことを、せざるを得なくなる。
それが結果として
その人の幅を広げてくれるってことはあると思う。

この能力で人類はどれほど救われてきたか。
もちろん自分が挫折の渦中にいたりすると、
そんな悠長なことは言ってられないのだが。

でも目標にとらわれすぎている時は、なにか
他の多くのものを取りこぼしている気がするのだ。

シッダールタは、
「さぐり求める」の反対は「見いだす」
だと言っている。
見いだすとは、自由であり、心を開いており、目標を持たないことであると。
さぐり求めるのではなく見いだす。
こう思うだけで、今までとは違う見方ができるんじゃないだろうか。
