著者は明治に生まれて昭和45年に没した女流作家。
小説も著したが、随筆の方が評判が高かったようだ。講談社からは「もめん随筆」「きもの随筆」「絹の随筆」の随筆全集が刊行されていたが、現在入手できるのはこの文庫のみのようだ。
「もめん随筆」は3部作の中では文章のこなれなさが目立つ時期で、出世作でもある「着物・好色」以外には読み応えのあるものがない。残りの2作も文庫で出して欲しい。

同時代の随筆家というと幸田文が著名。幸田文は東京で生まれ暮らし、父の裏方を一心に勤めていたひとで、根付いた強さを感じさせる。森田たまは本人も文中で言うとおり「良く言えば素直、悪くいえばふわふわして」おり、文にも粘り強さがない。時折光る着眼があるが、それがきらと光っただけで終わってしまう。こちらに迫るものがない。見たものを「私はこう感じたの」と伝えるだけだ。甘い。
しかし軽い気持ちで読み流せる良さがある。お風呂で半身浴しながら読むのに最適。

また当時の風俗を知るにはとても参考になる。つきあいのあった作家や有名人の名前が出てくる。
戦前の東京の女学生の髪型、衣装などに関する記述もおもしろかった。
