著者略歴 (「BOOK著者紹介情報」より)

内田 百〓@6BE1@
1889‐1971。本名・内田栄造。別号・百鬼園。岡山市に酒造家の一人息子として生れる。旧制六高を経て、東京大学独文科に入学。漱石門下の一員となり芥川龍之介、鈴木三重吉、小宮豊隆、森田草平らと親交を結ぶ。東大卒業後は陸軍士官学校、海軍機関学校、法政大学のドイツ語教授を歴任。1934(昭和9)年、法大を辞職して文筆家の生活に入った。初期の小説には『冥途』『旅順入城式』などの秀作があり、『百鬼園随筆』で独自の文学的世界を確立。俳諧的な風刺とユーモアの中に、人生の深遠をのぞかせる独特の作風を持つ(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

きちんと背広を着て、帽子をかぶって、ステッキ片手に列車の旅。道連れはヒマラヤ山系氏。
ただ乗っているのがよく、しかも往復のうち往路だけがいいという百先生です。観光めぐりなどははなから眼中にありません。
おまけに往路は一等車で復路は三等車。借金してでも一等車だそうです。そこがまた百先生らしいのです。

この超ウルトラわがまま列車の旅の随筆のなかに、それらの理由が書いてありますから読んでのお楽しみです。

文章がうまく、また読みやすいので、たちまち引き込まれます。

一言で言うと、列車版「ボートの三人男｣と言ったところでしょうか。ジェローム・Ｋ・ジェーロムのユーモア小説はイギリス紳士がボートでテムズ川をさかのぼってゆくという物語です。いかにも英国紳士といった会話に思わずクスリとしてしまいますが、刻々と変化するテムズ川の美しい景観の描写も素晴らしい。阿房列車も単に面白おかしいだけで無く、戦後の様子もこちらに伝わってきます｡同行者のヒマラヤ山系とのコンビもぴったりです｡解説には山系は
百の愛読者で原稿が欲しさで同行したとありました。でもヒマラヤ山系も自分が｢まるでどぶ鼠」だとか「汚らしい｣なんて書かれるとは思ってなかったろう。そんな事も考えながら読めばもっと面白いと思います。
　阿房列車を読んだら、是非｢ボートの三人男」も読んでみて下さい。

内田百の随筆は栄養満点なのですが、名人芸の落語に似ています。大笑いさせられる場面でも、演じている（書いている）方は澄ました顔をしている、或いは、しかめっ面をしている。内田百の数ある随筆や小説の中でも「阿房列車」シリーズは最上質のものです。とくに弟子のヒマラヤ山系との会話が絶妙で、なんだか尻切れトンボのようなものが多く、百先生も「？」なのですが、相手はしたり顔で澄ましている。そしてその逆もあり。大体しかつめらしい理屈を（屁理屈というべきか）ならべて、普通人の意表をつく所など可笑しくて可笑しくて大好きです。関西風にいうと「ケッタイなオッサン」の頑固な屁理屈と行状記。
でも真実をついているところもあり、何より文章は絶品です。
