1963(昭和38)年、岡山県生れ。出版社勤務を経て執筆活動に入る。’91(平成3)年、『ビフォア・ラン』でデュー。’99年、『ナイフ』で坪田譲治文学賞を、『エイジ』で山本周五郎賞を受賞。2001年、『ビタミンF』で直木賞を受賞する。現代の家族を描くことを大きなテーマとし、話題作を次々と発表している(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

受験で取り上げられることが多い重松清とのことで、子供に読ませようと買い始めて早や2年。すっかり親子ではまっています。本は図書館で借りることも頻繁ですが、なぜか重松の作品だけは買っています。　それはやはり、どの本からも著者がまるで
現役の小・中学生でもあるかのように、子供たちの息づかいや気持ち・気分が

リアルタイムで伝わってくるから・・　　エイジは、まあ典型的なちゅー坊。

　家族とも会話をするし、学校には好きな子もいる。部活のバスケは足の故障で宙ぶらりんの状態。クラスメートからの受けもいい方だ。そんなある日、同級生が通り魔事件で捕まる。一応いい顔をし、キレル手前でセーブしてるエイジも、いっそう心の葛藤にゆれる。実のところ、周りはムカツクことばかり。

エイジの気持ちは読んでいて、痛いほどだ。　彼の名は栄司、ゆれるAgeでもある。

人間は常に変化してゆく生き物だ。だけど、小説上でそれを書くのはすごく難しい。たいていは、読者に、「あ、作者はここで主人公をこう変えたかったんだな」とばれてしまう。そんな風に切れ目が出来てしまっている小説が多い。だけど、『エイジ』では、現実の世界のように「いつのまにか」一回り大きくなる少年を、とてもたくみに描き出している。そこが、この小説のすごいところだ。
また、主人公のエイジの思考を細かく、順を追って描写している点においても、すごいと思う。『エイジ』には、ごまかしや、知ったかぶりや、わざとグロテスクに書いた部分がない。暗い、苦しい雰囲気になっても、それがあまりにもリアルだから、読者は嫌な気持ちにはならないと思う。
青春文学に興味のある人、あの、窮屈だけど輝いている時代をもう一度経験してみたい人は、ぜひ読んでみてほしい。勿論、現在エイジと同じ中学生をやっている人にも、おすすめする。読後にはきっと、すがすがしい気持ちになるだろう。

A Kid's Review
自分は中学生の時にこの本を読んで衝撃を受けました。まるで中学時代の自分が感じていることをそのまま本に書いたみたいで、思春期の心の荒みや行き場の無い破壊衝動、本当にリアルな本だと思う。大人になってから読み返すと格好つけたがりのくせの躓くとすぐ逃げる子供の頃の自分を思い出す。
「いつの時代でも私たちは大人が思っているよりもずっと一生懸命に生きていると思う。色々なことを必死に模索し拾い上げたり投げ捨てたりしながら自分の道を進んでる。」という最後の解説の部分を読んだ時いろんな意味で救われた。是非中高生や大人の方々に読んでもらいたい。
