ぼくの大好きな文芸評論家、北上次郎が「これは日本人全員の必読に値する国民的大河小説だ！」と大絶賛している「流転の海」の第２部である。松坂一家は、伸仁の父親である熊吾の故郷、愛媛県の南宇和に母子の健康のことを第一に考えて、それまでの事業をたたみ、戻ることになる。そこで伸仁が４歳から５歳になるまでの１年間が丹念に綴られている。第１部では赤ん坊であった伸仁が腕白小僧になっているのがとても微笑ましい。本書の白眉は熊吾の想念である。彼はいろんな人物と邂逅し、さまざまな出来事に遭遇する。そのたびに彼は深く考えるのである。その思考の経過が素晴らしい。読んでいてううむ、と唸らされつつ、共感し、オノレもかくありたいと思わせるのだ。それでは引き続き第３部「血脈の火」を読みたいと思う。

流転の海第２部です。が、この１冊を最初に読んでも熊吾のエネルギッシュな生き様が伝わってきます。熊吾一家に関わる人々は嫌になるくらい人間臭く、心の中の奥底からくる哀しい・悔しい・恋しい・愛しい・・・そんな思いをそれぞれに表現していきます。

息子・伸仁のために大阪での商売を捨て、故郷の宇和島に戻ってきた熊吾。今回のキーマンになる「をうどうのいさお」との冒頭のやりとりは少し謎めいた対話になっています。
そしていきなりこの巻の珠玉！（と私は思う）牛殺しの場面へとなだれ込みます。その後も次々に事件（というほどのことはない「出来事」くらいかも）は続き、そこに熊吾の内省が挟まれてきます。
この内省部分の記述がすごいなあと思いました。熊吾が感じて、それを考えて言葉に直しているんですが、なんというか考えさせられるものが多く散りばめられています。分量としては非常にささやかですが、味わって読みたいなあと思わせられます。
妻・房江の述懐も増えてきますがそこには何かしら不穏な影がにおっているような描きぶりです。
そして唐突に訪れる宇和島編の結末。後半は「えっ？」というくらいに物語が各所でスピーディーに展開しますので、もう一気に読めちゃいます！
