この本は、私が宮本作品にはまったきっかけとなった作品です。 日常、生と死は対極にあるような錯覚に陥りますが、この本を読んでから「生きる」「生と死」に対する価値観が変わりました。 人間誰もが心の奥底で「幻の光」を見ているかもしれない。そして同時に生きていくことの素晴らしさを考えさせられた、読書後も深く余韻を残す小説です。

映画よりも断然こちらを読むべきだと思います。

こんなに寂しいのに、こんなに懐かしいのは何故だろう。自分と幼い子供を残して自殺してしまった夫にとつとつと思い出やら今のことやらを語り続ける。残された者の哀しさだろうか。話したい、愛したい、見つめていたい相手が今はいない。どうして、どうして？と問い詰めたいのに。断ち切れない思い。もうこの世にいない人に話しかけずにはいられない寂しさ。心が届かない哀しさ。それは再び嫁いだ日本海の暗い海にも似ている。深く、暗く、永久に打ち寄せる波、波、波・・・。

心が千切れるほど哀しい本なのに、手放せない。

　宮本輝のマスターピースの一作である。

　話自体は大した話ではない。主人公の夫は　主人公と子供を残して　突然自殺してしまう。主人公はぼう然とした日々を大阪ですごす。やがてやってくる新しい再婚の相手は　能登半島の男やもめである。主人公は嫁いで行く。日本海の荒れた海を見ながら　主人公は　しかし相変わらずぼう然としている。

　全編を「死」が覆っている。日本海の荒涼とした風景に宮本は「死」を混ぜ合わせて　なんとも表現できないような風景画を描き出している。生きる力を喪うことに魅かれつつある主人公を脇から支える女漁師等のたくましい女性像もたくみに描かれている。読んでいて最後に見えて来る明るさは　「錦繍」にも共通するかと思う。

　地味な話ながら熱狂的なファンがいると聞く。そうだろうなと思う。「死」に見入られながらも引き返してきた人には特に魅力的な一作なのではないかと思う次第。
