シェイクスピアの生い立ちから始まり、作品の一つ一つに独自の見解で意見が書かれてあり、とても興味深く読めました。
シェイクスピアの作品はストーリーの面白さ以上に台詞の巧みさにあることがよくわかりました。
知らない作品でも内容と見所、名台詞が書いてあるので理解しやすかったです。日本語では現しきれない部分が多々あるようなので原文を読めたら面白そうだと思いました。

四大悲劇の内容が大体分かるが、歴史物は観たことがない、原書まで買って読む程ではないがまだ観たことの無い劇の内容も知りたい、といったぐらいの中級者がシェイクスピアについての知識や話の筋を得るために最も適した本。
書き口が軽いのでさらっと読めるところも良い。
阿刀田氏の解説シリーズは初めて読んだがちょうど良い情報量だと思った。

シェイクスピアの有名戯曲の紹介本。阿刀田高が得意とする類の入門書である。私は1998〜2000年頃、シェイクスピアの作品に集中的に取り組んだことがあるが、粗方忘れていたから、記憶の整理には役立った。なのに何となく不快感がある。

本書の記述は大変わかりやすくて、どこをとっても難解な文章には出会わない。本来、それは素晴らしいことである。しかし私の不快感は、そのことと無縁ではなさそうだ。つまり、品格の問題である。

紋切り型のくだけた表現が随所にある。そのため文体がおっさん臭い。そして、私は何となく、馬鹿にされている、と感じた。あるいはそれは言い過ぎにしても、作者が圧倒的な知識差を自覚することによって、読者を手玉に取ろうとしている、という文章に思えた。もしも私がシェイクスピアの作品をまったく知らなかったら、こんな印象は持たなかっただろう。せっかく役立つ本なのに申し訳ない気がするけれど、作者が学者ではなく文章のプロであるだけに、文体において改良の余地があると思う。
