田辺聖子氏の『新源氏物語』の続編にあたる。
光源氏の子供・孫の代の物語「宇治十帖」が、流麗なロマンチックな物語にしたてられた。

たぐいまれな美貌と知性、魅力に満ちた貴公子・光源氏。うつくしき義母に思いをかけ、幼女をさらって妻とし、兄の婚約者・人妻・友人の恋人と恋愛模様をくりひろげ・・・満ち足りてまばゆいばかりの人生は、さまざまな業にからめとられ、守るべきものをも失って生涯を終える。

「宇治十帖」は、より人間くさい懊悩、俗っぽい人間ドラマを繰り広げる。薫君と匂宮、光源氏を２つにわけたような貴公子。２人が愛を競う浮舟は、人の心の頼みがたさに無情を感じ出家する。

すべてに恵まれた貴公子・光源氏と、妾の子でよるべなき身の浮舟が、人生のおわりに同じ境地にたどりついた不思議を思う。奥行きふかい人間の物語を、うつくしい現代語でつづった一冊。平安の人々はかくも胸ときめかせて読んだかと、なぞるようにたのしめる。

5.0 out of 5 stars 田辺さんによって、「宇治十帖」の良さを感じることができました, 2009/5/22
『源氏物語』というと、どうしても光源氏が中心で、源氏の君がどこそこの姫君とどうしたこうした、
どこそこの身分の高い女性と禁断の恋に落ちた、そういう主の浮ついた話にじっと耐え、正妻として
輝く紫の上。結局は源氏も紫の上を大切にするのですが…と、まあ、こういった物語で、源氏の死と
ともに、『源氏物語』はあっけなく幕を閉じ、次の「宇治十帖」にいたっては、息子世代の話ですし、
原典を読んでもピンと来なかったのです。

ところが、田辺さんの『新源氏物語』（上・中・下）に引き続き読んでみたところ、こんなに
おもしろかったのかと驚きました。
浮舟という女性を思うとき、昔、どんよりと曇っていた空から雨が落ちてきて、傘をさして宇治川を
眺めた、あの暗い色合いを思い出します。
浮舟自体が暗い女性というのではないのですけど、陽のさす宇治川よりは、暗めの宇治川のイメージ。
上・下ともに、飽きることなくすーっと読んでしまいました。
