芸人はなわに、何も誇れるものはないと歌われた佐賀。
どっこい、佐賀には鍋島藩の子孫がいる。
人こそ佐賀の財産ではないか。
前置きはさておき、この本は帯にあるように現代人に向けられた挑戦状であったと思う。
お前らはこれほどの覚悟で生きているかと真剣の切っ先を突きつけられながら、読んだように思う。
この本が書かれた時期はちょうどバブル時期。人はどれほどの覚悟で人生を生きていたであろう。そう思うとき、作者が「武士道」をはずした意味がわかるような気がする。
サラリーマンはもとより、これからの日本を背負う高校生や大学生に読んでほしい本である。

ハリウッド映画『ラスト・サムライ』のヒットで、「武士道」という思想が再評価されている。「武士道」とは何かと考えると、私は「生き方」ではないかと考えている。もちろん、真の「武士道」とは何なのか、私自身もはっきりとわかっているわけではないが。
　ある時から人生を後ろから考えるようになると言った人がいた。「後ろから」というのは、「死」から遡って、ということだ。それがいつなのか、何を契機とするかは人によって異なる。年齢かもしれないし、それまでできていたことができなくなった時かもしれないし、誰か大切な人を失った時かもしれない。そしてそれはもしかすると、誰にでもある瞬間ではないのかもしれない。
　ただ、その瞬間を持った人は「自己の死」を起点に人生を考えるようになる。「死」から逆算して人生を考え、人生の中で何か大切で、何が必要なことなのか、そうした一つ一つを考え、選択しながら生きていく。私は「武士道」とはそういう考え方ではないかと考える。常に死を見つめ、死を覚悟して生きるとは、生の見つめ、自分の生をどう生きるかという覚悟と同じだ思うのだ。「いかに死ぬか」は「いかに生きるか」なのである。

しかし、本書の本当の素晴らしさはそうした思想性にあるのではない。エンターテイメントとしての完成度の高さである。常に「死」から「生」をみつめる「死人」たちの生き方は、自然、苛烈なものにならざるを得ないだろう。そうした「死人」である斎藤杢之助が本書の主人公である。冒頭の虎の爪に引き裂き殺される「死の稽古」の場面から始まり（そういえば、『ラストサムライ』も虎と闘う場面から始まっている。偶然であろうが…）、筆者得意の「死人」「いくさ人」たちの活躍に物語世界にぐいぐいとひきこまれる。この杢之助を中心に、中野求馬、牛島萬右衛門の３人の「死人」たちの権力者に媚びず、自分達の信じるもの、守ろうと思うもののために、そして遊びに命を賭ける姿が描かれていく。彼等は「死人」「いくさ人」独特の冴えた目で、自分を、他人を見つめていく。次々に鍋島藩にふりかかる事件や幕閣との確執などの出来事と相まって、彼等のその破天荒で苛烈な生きざまは痛快かつ爽快である。

残念ながら、題名だけを見て、「死を礼讃するような本」と決めつける人がいるようである。しかし、本書はそんなに狭い思想を説いたものではない。ぜひ本書に目を通してほしい。

葉隠武士の壮絶な生き様・崇高な精神を垣間見ることができる。
常住坐臥、死人として生きている武士たち。主君のために命はあり、誇りの為に死ねる男たちの、潔さ、強さ、誇りの高さに痺れるばかりである。

そしてこの小説が何よりすごいのは、「葉隠武士ってこんなに立派なんだぞ！」という、
テーマ重視で終わっていないところである。

各エピソードが、まるでミステリーでも読むかのように、問題が提示され、登場人物の苦悶があり、はっとさせられる解決策が取られるという、読み物としての面白さが大いにある。
この、テーマ（葉隠武士の生き様）とプロット（話の筋）の見事なハーモニーが、
私を完全に魅了した。ぜひとも多くの人に読んでもらいたい作品である。
