主役である鬼麿は、まさに異色。
出自は、隆慶一郎の作品らしく、山人である山窩の一族。
刀法も通常のものではなく、腹を突き出すようにして体を反らせ、腕を大きく後ろに振りかぶった据物斬りの形。
そこから目をつぶり、剣尖の届く円内のものをことごとく斬る。
この鬼麿をつけ狙う伊賀組との凄絶な死闘が、本作の醍醐味だろう。
最終盤、かやの里に師・清麿が残した刀を、分解再生する焼直しに没頭する鬼麿。
十日間の作業の後、仕上がった刀を砥石にかけながら、その刀の肌の美しさに、胸を震わせ、涙をこぼす。
「刀鍛冶以外にこの悦びを知る者は、誰一人いないだろう」
その仕事ごとに、醍醐味というものはあるはずだ。
しかし、それを知ることができるのは、本当の意味でその仕事に没頭したことのある者だけなのだろう。
職業人として、何とかそこまでたどり着きたいと思う。

隆慶一郎の小説の中では比較的軽めで、気軽に楽しめる作品だ。

一番勝負〜八番勝負の八部構成となっているため、剣豪小説によくあるスタイルとの決闘シーンが主題のような体裁を取っているが、読み終わってみると主人公の鬼麿と師匠の清麿の何にも縛られない自由な生き方が印象に残る。

主人公の鬼麿は刀鍛冶の清麿の弟子で、師匠の清麿から死の間際にある依頼を受ける。その依頼とは清麿が若い頃に江戸から出奔して逃走の旅をした際に、旅費を稼ぐためにやむを得ず各地で手抜きの刀を量産したが、そのような駄作を残したことが心苦しので、それを探し出して一本残らず折ってほしいというものだ。

これに応えて鬼麿は若き日の師匠の旅の後を巡って各地を彷徨い、同じくその刀を狙う伊賀忍者たちと激闘を繰り広げることになるが、隆作品らしく鬼麿も師匠の清麿もタイプは違うが女にもてて、旅先で出会う女達との交情もたっぷり描かれている。また、江戸から京都まで鬼麿が滞在する各地の様子もきちんと詳しく描かれており興味深く、単なる決闘小説にとどまらず色々な角度で楽しめる作品である。

世に名高い刀工、四谷正宗こと山浦清麿の弟子で大男の鬼麿、師匠が臨終の際に残した「金に困って作った数打ち（量産）の刀を折ってくれ」という願いをかなえるために、大太刀を背負い刀探しの旅に出る。

この鬼麿の粗にして野だが卑にあらずという言葉どおりの人物なので、天衣無縫、自由奔放、やりたい放題な乱暴者に見えるのだが、実は心優しき筋が一本ビシッととおった男。その上飛び抜けた剣の腕まで持っているものだから、少年になつかれたり、行く先々の女性と床を共にしたり、さらには師匠とワケありで鬼麿を執拗に付け狙う敵の親玉の娘に惚れられたりと、そのモテることといったら。なんとも羨ましい男なのです。
流浪の民と皇家の関わり合い、忍者、幕府の権力の及ばない地への憧憬など、作者の魅力がギッシリと詰め込まれている時代小説です。
