有名な動物行動学者のエッセイ集を文庫化。身近な動植物を題材に、生態系のあり方から人間文明の歴史にまで思いを巡らせます。声高に環境問題を叫ぶのではなく、生物多様性の貴重さを伝えてくれます。
白眉は「大学って何？」。四十年以上を過ごした”大学”を去る筆者が大学の、ひいては学問の意義を自問する渾身の思考に圧倒されました。

5.0 out of 5 stars 人間も限りなく〈動物〉だとは思うのですが、どこか違ってしまったんですね, 2009/2/16
日高さんのいつもながらの読みやすい本だと思います。
専門的な分析も当然出てきますが、私たちの知っているようで知らない動物たちの生態を、ユーモア
たっぷりに説いていらっしゃいます。
タヌキの子育ても、ほほえましい。
でもタヌキってあんなに夫婦で一生懸命子育てするのに、子育てが済むと〈次のペアー〉だなんて、
潔いというか…「別れても好きな人」のメロディーで、「終わったら、次のペアー♪」なのね。
文明社会を人間は選んでしまったのかもしれませんが、やっぱり〈動物〉のはしくれだと思います。
自然環境をしっかり考えていきたいと思いました。
