小林信彦の、いわば芸能界・文壇事情暴露小説。華やかにみえる世界の内幕はかくも汚いものである、という当たり前のような話を、悪魔によって別人に変身した中年男の目で描く。複眼的な面白さがそこから生じる。

いつものように、もじりを主体とした彼のギャグは比較を絶している。しかし、ギャグの質量ともに、「つかみ」の光彩陸離たる連射に比べて、あとは多少（かなり）見劣りがする。長い作品の後に向かうほど物足りなさを感じたのは、そのせいであろう。プロットで読ませる小説ではないから、ギャグの配置が尚更難しい。もう少し短く、小気味よく終われなかったのか、という不満が残った。

なお解説の大岡昇平は、本書の解説をどういうつもりで引き受けたのか？他人の作品に解説を書くなどという、サロンの「仕事」のありようを、本書は嗤っているはずなのに。

著者が現実に潜り抜けてきた三つの世界、すなわち芸能界と出版界と文壇の舞台裏をグロテスクに戯画化してみせた長篇小説。その意味では小林信彦版の『大いなる助走』ともいえるが、筆致そのものはむしろ井上ひさしを連想させる。ただし芸能関係のペダントリイは、やはり小林信彦自身のものだ。

小林は十代の頃から純文学に志し、地味な小説をコツコツ書き綴るところから出発した作家であって、本書における、あまり上出来とも思えぬ下ネタギャグの連発ぶりは痛々しく映る。小林は別のところで「売れないことを誇るような趣味は、ぼくにはない。売れないことの悲惨さは、商人の息子としてよく知っている」とも述べている。この小説も勿論、初めから売るつもりで書いたのであろう。それにもかかわらず本書が商業的にあまり成功しなかったのは皮肉と言う他ない。その理由はいくつかあるだろうが、やはり著者の根本的な生真面目さが邪魔をしたと言えるのではあるまいか。
