旧制の小学校を卒業して、すぐに社会人となった池波氏の「食」の歴史は長い。１０代の頃から、自ら稼いだお金で、食べたいものをお気に入りの店で食してきた、たたき上げの食通である。しかも、通ぶらないところがいい。読んでいて、懐かしく心地よい。書かれたのは昭和５０年代なので、それぞれの店について、「もう今は変わってしまっただろうなあ。」と思いながらも、「今も変わらずにいてほしい。」と期待もしてしまう。

池波氏が小学校の頃、中山安兵衛の十八番斬りの現場を友達と地図を片手に訪ねるエピソードなど、「池波正太郎ワールド」を創り上げた背景も楽しめる。

この本は、写真も豊富で楽しませてくれるが、グルメガイドブックのように読むことはお勧めしない。それは、著者も、この本に出てくる店の主人たちも望んではいないと思う。

　東京の下町で、戦前生まれの父母に育てられた私にとって、この本を読んで浮かぶ風景は将に懐かしいの一言。街の風景描写、店の佇まいや出された料理の記述は、今なお文壇随一の著者です。

　銀座・浅草・・・。同じ店でも今とは違う暖簾のはためきと、料理人の様子が魅力的に描かれています。読んでいるだけで空腹になるのですが、外出することから離れている高齢者の方に読んでいただくと「元気」が湧いてくるのではないでしょうか？　想像力があれば、或いは名店に通ったことのある裕福な家庭で育った若者を除けば、３０代中盤以下の方にはイメージが付き難いかと思いますが、それ以上の世代の方には是非お奨めします。

著者は食いしん坊である。しかも、年季が入っているから、昔食べた味の話をさせると独壇場となる。その食いしん坊が美味しいと感じたその美味しさが真摯に書かれる。九州の青二才の食いしん坊は、読後にすわとばかりに東京へ飛び、銀座の資生堂パーラーでチキンライスを注文したのでした。
