1915年岐阜県生れ。東京大学英文学科卒。1954(昭和29)年「アメリカン・スクール」で芥川賞、’65年『抱擁家族』で谷崎潤一郎賞、’72年『私の作家評伝』で芸術選奨文部大臣賞、’81年『私の作家遍歴』で日本文学大賞、’82年『別れる理由』で野間文芸賞、’97(平成9)年『うるわしき日々』で読売文学賞。2006年遺作『残光』を発表後、肺炎のため死去(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)
