この本が書かれたのは、いまから30年近く前のことだ。著者の有吉さんはこれを書いた10年後に急逝している。現代のBSEや農薬問題など、これほど食品の安全性が問われているこの時代に生きていたら、何を思い、またどんな小説を書かれただろうか。

30年前に書かれたものでも、ここで有吉さんが訴えようとしていることは、現代の環境や食の問題の根本と何ら変わらない。むしろ変わらなすぎることに驚愕を覚える。消費者は、便利さから無意識に毒を選び、業界は安全性より経済を優先し、行政は業界の利益を守り、欧米でどんな問題が起きていようと日本は安全と嘘吹く。

有吉さんが書かれているように、「日本はあらゆる公害の人体実験を自ら行っていると、欧米から好奇の目で見られている」という現状は、いまも続いているの違いない。環境問題をいかに日本がないがしろにしてきたか、一消費者として、「うっ」と胸につまる記述がたくさんある。

この本は、生活者の目線で、平易なことばを使って、科学の知識のないものでも分かりやすく読める。その裏には、有吉さんの緻密で精力的な取材活動があった。ものすごい情報量がここには詰まっている。すでに環境問題のバイブルとして名高いが、現代においてこそ、読み返されるべき本だと思う。

アイガモ農法で知られる古野隆雄氏の試みはこの本がきっかけだったと言います。
選挙応援運動から始まるこの作品は、食品が農薬に汚染された状況である
と訴える候補者の訴えから、化学肥料とは何か、食品添加物とは何か、
それが身の回りの食品に何を起こしているのかを徹底的に追求していきます。
選挙の話はたち切れ状態になりますが、危機的現実に気が付いた医者、農家の
人々、漬物やさんたちが独自に解決策を模索し、答えをだしている様子は頭が下がる思いと
同時に励まされます。
農薬の前身とは何か。全部がそうだとは言いませんが戦争で使われた毒ガスです。
戦争が終わり、あまりの惨状に兵器として全面禁止となっていた毒ガスは農薬に生まれかわって
いた。田の雑草、害虫に限らず益虫、バクテリアを皆殺しにし、土を殺した。
作物に蓄積し、消費者の口に入る。決して分解されることのないそれらは体内に蓄積し、
ついには消費者の体を蝕んでいく。
味を濃くし、香りをきわだたせ、実をしまらせる堆肥が消える。
食品添加物の演出がとってかわる。
何を食べさせられているのかという思いがします。
本当に衛生的とは何か。毒や薬品が衛生や食品の品質を保つのか
消費者は考える必要があるでしょう。
現在７７歳の老人が生まれた頃（１９３０年）、世界人口は２０億だった（現在は６６億人）
という事実が追い討ちをかけて心にのしかかります。

米・茶農家でバイトしたことあるけれど、今の現状はマッタク変わっていない。今でも使われている薬の名前が出てきている。この３０年間、日本の農業はさらに自立できない方向へ進んでいるのではないか？そしてこれから先は・・・未来に希望が持てなくなる社会作りを進めている気がしてならない。
