奇想天外なストーリーの裏に流れる静かな死への恐怖。きっと作者自身が病院のベッドの上で描いた冒険物語をそのまま筆にしたのでしょう。着実に消えゆく生命の火と、それに抗う事のできない運命の厳しさを実感しながらの過酷な執筆活動だったのでしょう。カンガルーの袋の中に希望の光が入っていますように。

奇想天外なストーリーなのに、慌しさがない、とても「静かさ」を感じる物語です。特に下がり目の少女が歌う「人さらいの歌」は奇抜な歌詞なのに、物悲しくそしてとても「静か」なのです。それはあたかも深い海の底へとゆっくりゆっくり沈んでいくかのよう、ジムノペディを聴いた後のような深い印象を残してゆくとても静かな冒険です。

シュルレアリスムの影響を引き合いに出すまでもなく「夢の捕獲」は『笑う月』などでも具体的に語られているとおり安部公房の重要な主題の対象であったが、まさにそのテーマひとつに絞り込んだかのような、小説という形式による彼独自の明瞭な回答である。夢の夢性とは？半分は無意味でありながらもそれ故にリアルで、眠りから醒めるあの意識の曖昧なシフト時に、必死でどこかその一部分でも捕まえておかなければフワーッと煙のように消えてしまいそうな不安定な状態と構造。これを観察、記録し、より精確に言語化するという作業は相当困難であろう。古くは占いや宗教にはじまるようなそのイメージの集約の仕方- 最後は結局観念にまみれて何か別のものわかりのよいお話になって回収される- は、そのままでは論理的解釈が破綻するところからくるどこか安心できないような不気味さを性格とする所為であろうが、しかしこの夢性は安部作品全体の特徴ともいえるのではないか。作品はその淡々と展開していく状況の変化やそこに現れる独特な登場人物と主人公の心理描写などすべては一見具体的でわかりやすい。しかしひと度足を止めるてみると、通俗的なやりとりでさえどこか意味深げに思われるような夢特有のリアルさは、独自の言語表現で夢そのものを立ち現せてみせようとする強い意志による「夢の捕獲」の成果からなる夢性に拠るものである。それは「シュール」などといった軽薄なことばで形容されるような非日常的な出来事としての単なるお手軽な夢のお話ではなく、また、現在ではある意味定番ともなった夢とも現実ともわからない不条理な状況と閉息感を描いた「物語」でもなく、またその間とも簡単には言い難い固有な存在感をもって、有機的に漂っているというような、まさに、白昼に素面で目視できる「夢」そのものといった感じなのである。
