　最初読み始めた時には蘊蓄かと思いましたが、すぐに違うと気付きました。機械等の描写が妙に細かいんです。零式戦闘機の成り立ちから衰退を軸に様々な艦船を事細かに書いていて、当時の戦争状況も踏まえて、日本の各人がどう思って戦争に望んでいたか。とてもすんなりと読め、わくわくして読むことができました。戦争に対する認識が改まった一冊です。

当時最新鋭機の零戦を工場から各務原飛行場まで牛車（後に馬も併用）に乗せて２４時間かけて運んだということは、一番の驚きであったが、読み進むうちに道路事情の悪さ・振動の少なさなどを総合的に判断してあらゆる試行錯誤の結果だったことが良く解った。

海軍（発注者側）と民間（設計者）との間で繰り広げられる仕様と性能との息詰まるような戦いのドラマが本書には綿密に描かれている。技術者の端くれである私などにとっても、身につまされる思いでページをめくることとなった。これから技術者を目指そうとする人には必見の一冊である。

中国重慶での鮮烈なデビューから太平洋戦争終結までの長きに渡って文字通り日本を代表する戦闘機として第一線で活躍したのだから、零戦の優秀さには驚きの一言である。ただ、相手との工業力・資源力の違いはいかんともし難く、「零戦」と「軍事国日本」の生い立ちが妙にオーバーラップし、零戦の運命は軍事国日本の運命を正確に投影しているようで、読後妙に虚脱感に襲われてしまった。

余談ではあるが、今回私はこの本を読むにあたって、事前に「1/48 零式艦上戦闘機52型」のプラモデルを作っていた。それもスケルトンであり、中の骨組みから操縦席・エンジン部分まで精密に再現されているものである。おかげで、文章中の専門的な部品の配置なども頭に直感的に浮かびたいへん理解し易く読み進むことができた。

また、本書を読んだ後引き続いて「空母零戦隊　岩井勉著」も読むことを強くお勧めしたい。

読んだ感想ですが、どちらが先かわからないのですが、柳田国男著の
ほとんどダブル内容ですが、どちらが先かわかりませんが、内容が零戦の設計の堀越次郎さんの苦労しながら、世界でも最高峰の零戦の誕生秘話が描かれています。中国との戦争で苦戦していたのが、零戦で一気に日本の勝勢に導いた零戦は大活躍し、世界大戦に活躍しますが、
存在価値は高かったかもしれません。もし、零戦が開発失敗してれば、
早めに終戦を迎えていたかもしれません。そんな悲しい零式戦闘機の完成に至るまでの物語です。
