　ストーリーの猥雑な生命力に昭和無頼派作家の味を読めるが、そこは私小説「蛍の墓」や童謡「おもちゃのマーチ」を生み出した野坂の作品であり、何ともいえない可笑しさと哀感が伴っている。この小説は実はかなり技巧的に凝った作品でもあり、これが長編デビュー作ということは驚くべきことであろう。

　地の文と台詞の間に、関西弁による心情の独白を巧妙に織り交ぜて文体の問題に捻りを聞かせる一方で、関西弁のリズムを最大限に活かすことで言文一致以前、近世の世話物を彷彿とさせる不思議な言語空間を作り出している。やはり関西弁を駆使した町田康が文壇に活動をシフトした頃に、たまに野坂が引き合いに出されていたが、個人的には野坂の作品の方が読み応えがあると思う。どちらも私小説作家の側面を持つが、戦中派・野坂が実人生でくぐってきた悲劇の分、作品世界に重さと社会的な広がりがあるのではないか。

上品な方でも楽しめると思います。ＰＴＡでは確実に黙殺されそうな内容ですが、そういう人に限って裏では喜びそうな、とにかく、面白いとしか言いようのない傑作。最後のシーンは笑いどころか、もし自分がそんなことになったら洒落になっていないと恐怖する場面でもありました。とにかく、多少の癖はあっても、これ以上に笑える文学はないと思える素晴らしい本。

この小説に登場する人物は皆どこかしら壊れている。壊れているというのはやや曖昧な言い方かもしれない。とにかく、何かが欠落しているのだ。例えば、ブルーフィルムの編集に情熱と才能を燃やす男は、編集のためだけに性欲が昇華されてしまう。主人公のスブやんの娘は母親を亡くし、近親相姦まがいの行為を行う果てに売春を行うようになる。母の欠落。そしてスブやん自身は勃起障害という「欠落」を抱えながらエロ道を追及する訳だし、最期には生命を「欠落」させることで男性を屹立させるのだ。それこそ西鶴やらの「古典｣町人文学を思い起こさせるような文体の魅力。関西弁の響きはいやらしさをさらに増進する効果を持つ。たとえ現実の性風俗が本書を追い抜いてしまったとしても、本書の価値は依然「屹立」し続けたままだ。
