恥ずかしながら「栄光の階段」という書名と思って読んでいたのだった。
主人公の佐山は美容師として、独立して有名になっていく話しなのだ。
松本清張にしては珍しいなと思いつつ読んでいったのだが、どうもいつも通りの「悪いやつがのし上がっていく」話しなのだ。
これは「栄光」じゃないだろうと思って、カバーを見直したら、「夜光」だったというわけだ。

ぼくなんかが作文を書いたりするときは、タイトルにそれほどこだわりはなく、テキトーにつけることがある。
しかし、プロの小説は違うんだなと思った。書名には意味があるのだ。
その当たり前のことに、上巻１／３ほどのところで気付かされた小説なのであった。

しかし、さすがは松本清張である。
悪いやつがのし上がっていく、そんな単調なストーリーではないのだ。

1stワルの佐山に続いて、幸子が2ndワルなのだ。そして被害者は、男だか女だかわからない容貌のしかし内面は純な女のフジ子。
さらにそこに男社会で働く女性の立場の悲哀もおり混ぜている。
雅子と幸子とフジ子。
悪者であり、被害者であり、その遠因が男社会に生きていく女の生き方にあるのかもしれない。

「黒革の手帖」の男性版として、美容師としてのし上がって行く男性の破滅までを描いており、話としては非常に面白く読むことが出来ました。

但し、小説としてはどうでしょうか。
清張としては失敗作ではないかと思います。
全体を通して非常に強引さが目立ちます。

一番気になるのは、桑山検事の執念です。
何故そこまで主人公の佐山に執着し、担当でもない事件に首を突っ込むのか、そこに論理性がありません。
警察が自殺と断定した事件を殺人ではないかと疑い、関係がなさそうな佐山の行動を調べるため事務官を九州にまで行かせます。
次の殺人事件が起きても、やはり「検察一体化の原則」に反した動きをし、私的な調査を続けます。
最後には、「おとり捜査」紛いのことをし、雑誌を使って告発をし、検事の職を辞することになります。
ここまで佐山に拘る理由が、全く理解出来ません。
むしろ、桑山検事と言う「探偵」紛いの人物を登場させなかった方が良かったのではと思います。

それとも、警察の捜査や検察の在り方に疑問を呈するために、この作品を書いたのでしょうか。
それならそれで、もっと書き方があったような気がするのですが･･･。
