　大石先生を主人公とし、それを取り巻く１２人の子供たちの離合集散の運命と戦争という当時の暗い時代を背景にとらえた物語。先生を含め、１２人の子ども全部が主人公であるとも言える。戦争中の庶民の日常生活がすみずみまで描き出され、戦争が個人の生活に及ぼした具体的な姿と、その時代的な意味とが重ねて描かれている。壺井栄の文学は、庶民に味方する文学で、人間的で温かい。戦争を知らない人の方が多くなっていく時、未来に読まれ継がれるべき名作である（雅）

　女学校を卒業した大石先生は、瀬戸内海沿いの岬の分教場に赴任する。そこで、新入生12人の教師となる。大石先生と12人の子供達との交流を、戦前、戦中、戦後の二十数年間を通して書かれた物語です。

　私は、読む前に舞台背景に戦争があるのを知っていました。そこから、貧しさや、暗さや、苦しみを前面に押し出した話を予想していました。読んでみると、予想していた様に、貧しさや、暗さや、苦しみが書かれている部分が多くありました。けど、読んでいて気が滅入る事はありませんでした。むしろ頁をめくるのが楽しかったです。

　貧しさや、暗さや、苦しみが無理に強調されてなく淡々と書かれているので、気構えなく読めたのだと思います。
　読んでいると、別れの場面には悲しみが、再会の場面には喜びが、子供達の成長には活き活きした姿が、規則の中での教育の難しさやが、戦後には生き残った命を肯定して生きる事のすばらしさが伝わってきました。

戦中、戦後を舞台にした話は幾つも読みましたが『二十四の瞳』にはみなさんもご存知のとおり偉い人は出てきません。瀬戸内海の片田舎に生活していた子供たちと彼らの大石先生のお話です。大石先生との出会い、先生の怪我による別れ、本校での再会、思想統制に反発する先生の退職、終戦、末っ子の死、教え子の早苗の尽力による教職への復帰、成長した教え子達との再会と話は淡々としていますが反戦思想に貫かれています。この話が書かれた当時には新鮮なテーマだったんでしょうね。でも今これをあらためて読んでも陳腐化していません。世間の右傾化が懸念される昨今には見直されていいストーリーだと思います。
