　生の極限に達した時、人は何を思い、どう行動するのか。
　異国の地で敗残兵となった「私」は、与えられた一個の手榴弾によって死の自由を手にしながら、常に生を選択する・・・。

　緻密な描写は、今まで飢餓というものに無縁だった身にも、ほとんどそれを体感させる。安易な感傷を峻拒する内容は研ぎ澄まされた文体と完全に一致している。必然的に「私」の行為も「私」によって容赦なく分析されていく。
　
　深遠な思想を浅薄な読み方で汚（けが）すべきでないと思うと、身が引き締まり、意識的に速度を落とした。
　泣けばストレスが緩和されると聞くが、涙で洗い流すことなく、歯を食いしばって読んで頂きたい。

当初学校の図書館で、三島由紀夫の著作を目当てで、大岡昇平とともに載せられている分厚い本を借りた。大岡昇平は全く馴染みのない小説家だったけれど、三島由紀夫を読み終えて、大岡昇平の「野火」をなんとなしに読みはじめたとことろ、戦争を知らない私にとってとても衝撃的で、ナバ-ルで飢え死にした大々叔父がいたことを思い出した。

大江健三郎の初期作品ともまた違う、戦争の悲惨さや、人間の生の極限が巧みな、それでいて実直な筆で描かれ、読み終えて、現代の小説家が決して捉えることのできない生の証・執着がそこにあった。
まちがいなく、この「野火」は未来永劫受け継がれていかなければならない日本の名著だと感じた。

今年も終戦記念日を前に、この小説について考えてみたいと思う。
物語の主人公である田村は、本体を追放され、フィリピンの島内を彷徨する。人道的価値観を持った主人公は、戦争だからと割り切り、時には不本意な行動を起こさざるを得ない状況に陥る。しかし生命の極限に立たされても人肉嗜食には、踏み切らなかった。彼の思想には一種、人間をも超越した神の価値観が存在するかのような不思議さを読者に与える。
この作品は、理路整然とした文体で情景描写に長けており、文学的、芸術的価値も多大だと思われる。本作品から我々が得るべき教訓は、戦争という市民的価値観に反した行為は、単に人命だけでなく生命の根源的尊厳の侵害に当たるのだということを認識することだと思う。戦争の真実を伝える作品として、今後も輝き続けてほしいと切に願う。
