「しろばんば」は井上靖氏の代表的な作品。私は子供の頃初めて読んで以来、もう何度となく読み返してきた。
「小説を読む」というより、おぬい婆さんやさき子、蘭子といった小説の中の人たちに、
「会いに行く」という感覚のほうが強い。
井上靖氏の作品は、どれも人物の会話に個性とユーモアがあって、生きているような生活感や情緒がある。
人の匂いや温もりに、小説の中の人物であることも忘れて懐かしさを感じてしまう。

主人公・洪作の家族の間には、色々な「大人の事情」があり、その関係も少々ギクシャク。
育ての親のおぬい婆さんと、実の母や叔母のさき子は互いに悪口を言い合って、
幼い洪作を右往左往させることもしばしばだった。

が、彼らは互いにその「いがみ相手」がいなくなった後は、決して悪口を言わない。
「母が、亡くなったおぬい婆さんの悪口を言わず、洪作は嬉しくなった」
というシーンには、読んでいるこちらも一緒に嬉しくなってしまう。
知らない間に洪作と同じぐらいおぬい婆さんに愛情を感じていたことに気づかされ、
また、母にもおぬい婆さんに対する感謝と、潜在的な愛情があることにホッとするのだ。

洪作は成長するに従い「世の中には憂きことが多い」と気づきはじめるが、決して退廃するわけでもない。
それは、根底にある人間の愛情を、彼が感じてきたからではないだろうか。
この小説の最大の良さは、人に対して温かく、ポジティブであるという点。
井上靖氏の文体は飾りなくシンプルだが、それゆえ、淡く広がるような感動を与えてくれる。

大正時代の伊豆を中心とする静岡県を舞台にした小説です。
主人公の少年、洪作は、豊橋に実の父母がいて、憎まれているわけでもないのに、曾祖父の妾であるおぬい婆さんの手で、伊豆のいなかの母親の実家の土蔵で育てられています。しかし洪作は、一応ある程度の大家の息子さんということで、自然と、中学に行かないまわりの地元の子たちと違い、中学の受験勉強などをすることになります。こう書くと、「もしかしたらどろどろした小説なのではないか」と思うかもしれませんが、そういうことはなく、田舎にとけこんで育つ少年の生活やこころの機微が淡々と、しかしほのぼのと描かれています。

特にストーリーの展開もなく、ただ事件がいくつかありいろんなことを通して成長していく耕ちゃの物語…。しかし！この物語には不思議な力があります。それは、人を落ち着かせる力と自分について考えさせる力です。せかせかしているときも、興奮しているときもこれを読めば次第に心が落ち着きます。そして読んでいる内にだんだん自分とこうちゃを比較しています。そして、この本には大体のタイプの人間が出てきます。あっ　この人はあいつに似た性格だ　とか考えているとなんか良い感じになってきます。この本を読んで中１の僕も結構成長したと思います。耕ちゃといっしょに自分も成長できて、心も落ち着いて、ものを見る目も変わって…。１回読むだけで２つも３つも得をするこの本をぜひ皆さんも読んでください！
