とてもはかない純愛の物語。二つ年上の民子と政夫はいとこ同士。政夫の母があまり丈夫ではなかったため、民子は政夫の家へ手伝いに来ていた。もともと二人は実のきょうだいのように育っていたため、とても仲が良かった。しかし、二人が年頃ということもあって、周りがおせっかいをやくようになってきた。二人の恋やいかに。

結婚するのも女が二つ年上では格好が悪いなどと言われ、結婚相手も家族が選ぶような時代の話だ。二人の純粋な気持ちがまっすぐ、柔らかに描かれている。誰もがかつてこのような恋心を抱いた事があるだろう。その気持ちが切なく思い出される筆致だ。最初で最後の恋。心に残る一冊。

幼馴染のような関係で、
年を経るとともに、お互いを好きであることに気付いた少年と少女が、
心ならずも周囲の大人たちの介入によって隔てられ、
目に見える形としては結ばれない結末を迎えてしまう物語。

昔の作品であるので、当然のことながら文章の質は、
現代の小説とかなり違う。
しかし、それを読みにくいと思うことはなかった。
逆に、伊藤左千夫氏の文体が、野菊の墓を描くにあたって、
とても合っている。

好きとはどういうことか、人が死ぬとはどういうことか、
などを問うている作品ではなく、
人間の感情の根幹を揺さぶってくるような、
映像ではなく活字ならではの味が滲み出ている作品である。
一読をお勧めする。

松田聖子が主演した映画でも知られる、恋愛小説の名作です。ストーリーは単純です。幼なじみとして育った政夫と民子がお互いに対して恋心を抱くようになりますが、民子の方が年上なので当時（明治中旬）の常識では結婚することはできません。運命に引き裂かれる二人の悲劇と純粋さを描いた作品です。単純なストーリーだけに、ストーリー展開で読ませるというよりは、二人の心情をいかに描くかがポイントになるわけですが、伊藤左千夫はさすがに本職が歌人だけあって、古くさい文体であるにもかかわらず、現代人にも確実に詩情を感じさせる見事な描写となっています。

女性の方が年上だから結婚できないなんてことは、もちろん現代の日本ではまずありません。親が縁談を持ってきたら、たとえ嫌でも従わなければならないなんてことも滅多にないでしょう。だから現代の日本ではこんな悲劇は基本的に起きません。しかし、そうした抑圧の解消と共に、現代の日本では民子のような純粋さもなくなってしまったような気がしてならないのは僕だけでしょうか。
