森鴎外作品の中で一番お気に入りが、山椒太夫です。
この作品は、いわゆるひとさらいにあってしまう母親と姉弟を
描いた物語で、昔から今日に伝えられる物語で、森鴎外も作品として
書き留めています。文体も読みやすく、家族愛、兄弟愛を描いている
点でも是非読んでおいて欲しい作品の一つ。

私はこの本を小さい時からずっと親に読み聞かせられていました。
今はとても感謝しています。

森鴎外の冷静で独特な世界観に触れる事が出来る作品集だった。どれも優れた作品であったが、個人的には、彼の死生観が表れている『高瀬舟』が最も素晴らしかったと思う。この物語を読むと、「生とは何か？死とは何か？」ということを考えずにはいられなくなる。
助かる見込みのない病魔に侵された事で喜助の弟は自殺を図るが、それは「兄にこれ以上迷惑をかけたくない」という気持ちからであった。病気による肉体的苦痛、家族に迷惑をかけているという精神的苦痛、そして経済的負担と対峙しなければならなかった弟の行為は、ある意味当然の事であったように思える。
一方、兄の喜助は、自殺を図ったが死に切れなかった弟に懇願され、弟の喉元に刺さった剃刀をゆっくりと引く。「弟の苦しむ姿を見たくない」という気持ちからである。これも当然の行為ではないだろうか。喜助が弟を殺したのは事実であり、それが罪である事は間違いない。しかし、弟を苦しみから解放するためにはそれ以外に手段がなかったのである。それを殺人とし、殺人と同様の罰を与えるという事が正しいとは思えない。
オランダやベルギーでは、厳しい条件の下で安楽死が合法化されている。日本でも、安楽死や尊厳死についてもう少し活発に議論されてもいいのではないだろうか。・・・と、いった具合に、『高瀬舟』はわずか２０ページ程度の作品であるが強いメッセージが込められており、「人間の本質」についてイロイロと考えさせられる作品であった。

人買いによって引き起こされる母子の別離の悲劇を描いた「山椒大夫」、安楽死・自己充足を問題にした「高瀬舟」の表題作をはじめ、鴎外の世界観が窺える随想的散文「杯」、「妄想」、仇討ちのために日本を遍歴する家族の姿を描いた「護持院原の敵討」など12篇を収録。

鴎外の良さは、その一歩距離を置くような冷徹な視点にあると言われますが、その良さが如何なく発揮された作品ばかりです。運命の冷酷さとそれを受容する他ない人間の姿が、突き放すような文体で描かれていきます。また、他に迎合するのではなく自分の頭で考えるべきという個人主義と、人との関係性を捨てきれない、二律背反な世界観が広がっています。不思議な読後感が味わい深い作品集です。
